Kids can pick up their paint brushes and more during the summer


Valencia County art venues have something for everyone this summer with a wide array of activities that include programs for children and adults.

Belen Art League
The Belen Art League will once again have its Summer Art Program for children ages 7 to 12 in the Belen area. There will be many fun art projects available in two, one-week sessions at the gallery.
The first session being offered is from 9 to 11 a.m., Monday, June 3, to Thursday, June 6.
The second session is from Monday, June 10, through Thursday, June 13.
The cost is $5 for the first child, and $2 for the second child in the same family. The price is per week session, and all supplies are provided.

Tomé Art Gallery
Tomé Art Gallery holds kids pottery classes for ages 6 to 12 from 1 to 2 p.m. every Saturday. The cost is $7.50, including materials and firings. For information, call 565-0556.

Whitfield Wildlife Conservation Area
The Whitfield Wildlife Conservation Visitors’ and Education Center, 2424 N.M. 47, will be hosting “Recycled Revisited Times Three” workshops, where children can turn trash into a fashion statement.
• Tubes to Treasures:10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, June 15
• Whacky Weaves: 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, June 22
• You’ve Been Framed: 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, June 29
Each class has an additional surprise project.
The workshop leaders will be local artists Pati Woodward, Tomé Art Gallery’s fun stuff maker; and Joyce Johns, a dabbler. All materials will be provided, for a cost of $15 for the general public; $10 for students, seniors and Friend’s members. A family rate is $25. Pay for two classes and get the third for free.
All proceeds help support the Friends’ of Whitfield Community Education Fund.

School of Dreams Academy REAP Art and Robotics Day Camp
School of Dreams Academy invites children from first through eighth grade to the REAP Art and Robotics Day Camp. They will learn about and create various art projects, including creative writing in the morning and work on various science projects and learn about design concepts and documentation in the afternoon.
All the proceeds go to academic competitions for middle and high school students for the 2013-14 school year.
Cost: $100 per class

Session 2: June 10-14
8 a.m. to noon: Create your own story book (students will write their own stories along with illustrations and cover designs)
1 to 4 p.m.: Mousetrap Cars ( Build a car that is powered by a mousetrap while learning about most effective designs)
Recommended ages: First through fifth grade
Registration deadline: Monday, June 3
Session 3: June 17-21
8 a.m. to noon: Create your own diorama (Students will create their own diorama based from their favorite childhood book)
1 to 4 p.m.: Bridges (Students will learn about various bridges and design and build their own)
Recommended ages: First through fifth grade

Session 4: June 24- 28
8 a.m. to noon: Egypt week (students will learn about Egypt and create their own temples and mummify pharaohs)
1 to 4 p.m.: Demobots/ Botball (students will learn how to build Lego robots and program in kiss C along with basic documentation)
Recommended ages: Fifth through eighth grade
