Mascarenas celebrate 50th wedding anniversary
Florentino and Betty Mascarena, of Belen, are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on May 30. They were married in 1963 at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church.
Tino graduated from Belen High School in 1959, then went to work as a fireman at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, where he retired with a medical disability. He enjoys gardening and exercise.
Betty attended Rio Grande High School in Albuquerque, and later took classes at the University of New Mexico-Valencia Campus. She enjoys genealogy.
Tino and Betty were the owners and operators of Sunshine Child Care in Jarales for 20 years. After closing the day care, Betty worked as the director of religious education at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Peralta. She retired after 10 years of service.
Tino and Betty are both very involved in the marriage enrichment program at Our Lady of Belen. They are on the team of wedding rehearsal preparation for the engaged, and in the Pastorela, which is a shepherd’s play presented annually at Christmas around New Mexico.
They belong to the Saturday night choir that sings in the mission church of San Francisco Xavier in Jarales. They also sing at funerals and wedding masses.
Tino and Betty were members of the Archdioceses of Santa Fe Task Force for Special needs. Tino belongs to the Knights of Columbus, and Betty is in the Catholic Daughter of the Americas.
Tino and Betty were blessed to have 12 children, Ruby, Judy and husband, Juan Gonzales, Cindy and husband, Paul Aragon, Kim and husband, Mike Urrutia, Cynthia and husband, Richard Crites, Molly, Sophia, Angie, Stephanie, Jonathan Mascarena, and their deceased little angels, John and Elizabeth.
Tino and Betty are the very proud and blessed grandparents of a total of 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Betty’s 91-year-old mother, LeeVanna Hodge, resides with them, along with two of their children, Jon and Stephanie.
The Mass of thanksgiving for 50 years of marriage was celebrated on May 25 at Our Lady of Belen with Father Stephen Schultz officiating. A reception followed at the Elks Lodge.
Their attendants for the 50th anniversary were Padrinos Frank and Rita Esquibel. The flower girls were Biank Rose Mazon and Emily Aragon. The bridesmaid was LeeVanna Mascarena, and groomsman was Demarr Lucero.
The music was provided by Joseph Mascarena DJ during the reception, which was catered by Sheila Garcia, followed by a dance, where music was provided by Los Alegres of Belen.
The couple will be going on a second honeymoon to Northern New Mexico and Colorado.
