Enchantment L.L. to host district baseball tournament
Youth baseball will be on display all Fourth of July weekend and into the following week as the District 9 Little League Baseball Tournament comes to Enchantment Little League in Los Lunas, beginning Friday night.
The tournament, which features 19 teams, will have five divisions playing — minor, 10-11-year-old, major, junior and senior with all division but 10-11-year-olds sending representatives to their respective state tournaments in cities around New Mexico.
The county’s three leagues — Belen, Enchantment and Yucca — all have teams in the minor and major division with teams also coming in from South Valley and Westgate Little League in Albuquerque, as well as Isleta Little League from Isleta Pueblo and Mt. Taylor Little League from Cibola County.
In the minor division tournament, the five-team double-elimination affair kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday, July 5, with a game between Belen and Yucca All-stars.
Enchantment then takes on South Valley at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 6. The championship game for minors is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, with an “If game” (the game played if the team from the winners bracket loses in the championship) set for 6 p.m. Thursday, July 11.
The minor division state tournament will be played at La Plaza Little League in Las Vegas, N.M., on Friday, July 19.
The major division tournament features seven teams and starts Friday night. County teams don’t begin play until Saturday as Enchantment takes on Yucca while Belen plays South Valley. Both games begin at 9 a.m.
The major division championship is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, July 11, with the “If game” set for 6 p.m. Friday, July 12. The state tournament for the majors division starts Friday, July 19, at Zia Little League in Albuquerque.
Enchantment Little League is the only county league sponsoring teams in the junior and senior divisions. No Valencia County teams will be sponsoring a 10-11-year-old team.
The three-team, double-elimination junior division tournament begins at 6 p.m. Friday with Albuquerque teams Westgate and South Valley taking on each other. The winner plays Enchantment at 9 a.m. Saturday.
The junior division championship is slated for 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, with the “If game” scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 10. The state competition for the junior division is set to start Friday, July 19, at the Shorthorn Little League in Carlsbad.
Enchantment and South Valley play each other in the two-team, best two-of-three senior division tournament. The two square off at noon Saturday, then play again at 9 a.m. Sunday. If the loser of game one wins the second game, the teams will play again at 6 p.m. Monday night for the championship.
The senior division state tournament is set to start Friday, July 19, at the Gallup Little League
Westgate and South Valley will play each other in a best two-of three tournament as well in the 10-11-year-old division beginning Friday.
The championship game for the 10-11s is set for 9 a.m. Saturday with the “If game” scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday. The winner of that series moves on to the state competition at Portales Little League beginning Friday, July 19.
