Suspect hits LLPD unit
Police are searching for a man who rammed a police vehicle after he was stopped for a traffic violation Sunday night.
Los Lunas Police Officer Ryan Gray had stopped the driver of a 1989 Toyota pickup truck at about 10:50 p.m. Sunday on South Los Lentes, between Morris Road and Castillo Drive, because the vehicle had only one working headlight.
Gray approached the driver and asked him for his driver's license, registration and insurance, the man told the officer he didn't have the documentation. The driver gave the officer a name and date of birth, but Gray could not find anyone with that information in the system.
While Gray was talking to dispatchers, the man backed the truck into the police car, causing front-end damage. Gray dodged out of the way and was not struck.
The man drove away into the Carson Park area, then through a fence at the Los Lunas Waste Water Treatment facility off Chamisa Avenue. Other Los Lunas officers searched for the driver, but could not find him.
After sending out the information about the driver and the vehicle's description to other law enforcement agencies, Valencia County sheriff's deputies found the pickup truck in an open field south of the waste water treatment facility. The truck had been reported stolen out of Cibola County.
While searching the pickup, Los Lunas Police Detective Johnny Cappelli discovered a small bag of methamphetamine inside it. The identity of the man is still unknown.
