Lee is a retired social worker, and David is a retired teacher.

Rev. Lisa L. Phillian, of Rainbow Weddings in Palm Springs, conducted the ceremony, and the wedding was adorned with orchids.

The best man was the couple’s son, Buck.

A reception was held in Albuquerque, and the couple took a wedding trip to Hawaii.

The couple met 27 years ago at a motorcycle club.

Although the couple wanted to marry in New Mexico, where they were both born, they chose to marry in California rather than wait for the state of New Mexico to begin issuing wedding licenses for same-sex couples.

“We were very excited that (Peggy) Carabajal began issuing licenses to same-sex couples here in Valencia County,” Lee said.

“Had we known that was going to happen, we would have waited and gotten married at home, but then importance of being married and having our relationship legally recognized, and all the benefits that accompany it, was not something we felt we could wait for any longer, after having been together for 27 years.”
