Long-Archuleta Tourney draws well

More than 236 competitors from 23 different schools competed in the eighth annual Capt. Tamara Long- Archuleta Memorial Open Karate Championships at the Belen High School gym on Saturday, Oct. 19.

The tournament was the 30th hosted by Belen Goju Ryu Karate. It supports a college scholarship program named for Capt. Long-Archuleta, who died while serving in Afghanistan in 2003.

“We’re thankful for everyone’s support and especially our own students and families who work so hard setting up and running the event,” said tournament promoters Richard and Cindy Long in an email following the competition. ” It wouldn’t be possible without them.”

Anna Gorman from Mountain Eagle Karate in Albuquerque, was the Black Belt Kata Grand Champion and was the Black Belt Women’s Kumite Grand Champion. Uriel Lapoveic from Koryu Ryu in Albuquerque was the Black Belt Men’s Kumite Grand Champion while Keana Kast from Kim’s Tae Kwon Do in Albuquerque was the Youth Advance Grand Champion.

Justin Nguyen from Kim’s Tae Kwon Do in Albuquerque was the Youth Intermediate Grand Champion and the Youth Beginning Grand Champion was Christiana Yee from Kim’s Tae Kwon Do in Albuquerque. The Adult Kyu Grand Champion was Gretchen Lorenson from Koryu Ryu in Albuquerque.
