Belen’s Spragg signs to play volleyball for New Mexico
Surrounded by family and teammates, Belen High senior Victoria Spragg signed a national letter of intent to play with the University of New Mexico on Wednesday, Nov. 13, the first day of the early signing period.
Spragg, a 6-foot-4 middle blocker who earned co-Player of the Year honors in District 6-4A while playing for the Eagles, also led the team with 504 kills and 952 attacks on the season, as well as 84 blocks.
“I know the program and the coaches and I really like the environment and feel of it all,” said Spragg of UNM. “Plus getting to be by my family is a big thing as well.”
The Lobos currently stand in third place in the Mountain West Conference with an overall record of 20-7 under seventh-year coach Jeff Nelson. The Lobos have made two appearances in the NCAA Tournament since he arrived in 2007.
Spragg said she feels the Lobos are “a strong team and always open to new people.”
Belen coach Dominick Romero said Spragg brings a lot of versatility to the Lobos.
“She’s not just a big middle who can block, she can set for them, she can play back row, she can dig and she can hit from any part of the net,” he said.
