Hoopsters earn more post-season awards
The post-season honors for Valencia County basketball players keep coming.
Four senior cagers from the county were All-State selections and are slated to play in the Class 4A/5A Boys and Girls All-Star Basketball Games this summer.
Los Lunas seniors Jacob Holland and Chris Sanchez were named to the 12-player South squad that will play the north in the North-South all-star game to be played at Albuquerque’s West Mesa High School at 7:30 p.m, Thursday, July 31.
Seniors Karina Dow of Valencia and Teige Zeller of Los Lunas were also selected for the 12-player South girls squad, which will play the North at West Mesa on Friday, June 6.
NMPreps (www.NMPreps.com) also included a plethora of area athletes — and coaches — in their post-season accolades.
Holland and Zeller were both named Class 4A Player of the Year by the website, while Valencia girls basketball coach Manuel Vigil earned girls Coach of the Year honors.
On the boys side, Holland joined Sanchez on the NM Preps 4A All-Tournament team. Both also earned first team All-State honors. Seniors Colton Lewis of Belen, and Randy Moore of Los Lunas were also named to the NM Preps All-Tournament team.
Los Lunas senior Chad Muprhy was named to the NM Preps second team 4A All-State team while Lewis and Valencia’s Quentin Wanstall, a junior, made the All-State honorable mention list.
On the girls’ side, Dow and Zeller were both named to the NM Preps Class 4A All-Tournament team as well as the site’s first team All-State list.
Zeller was also named Tournament MVP.
Joining the two seniors on the NM Preps All-tournament team was Los Lunas’ Jordan Holland. The sophomore was also named to the NM Preps’ All-State second team along with Belen’s Mariah Forde.
These most recent honors come in addition to the honors announced last week by the Albuquerque Metro Basketball Coaches Association.
The MBCA’s 3A/4A boys and girls All-Metro all-star teams and All-Academic teams honorees on the boys side included
Los Lunas’ Holland and Sanchez, who were both named to the All-Metro first team. Lewis of Belen made the Al-Metro second team.
On the girls side, Dow, Forde and Zeller were all first team All-Metro selections.
LLHS’ Holland and Valencia senior Brenda Baeza were named to the second team. Belen senior Kristian Sainz and Los Lunas junior Elise Tapia were honorable mentions.
Five Valencia County cagers were named to the All-Metro All-Academic team — Lewis and Forde for Belen, Murphy and junior Sanae Gaerlan for Los Lunas, and Valencia freshman Lorien Aragon.
The AMBCA will honor its all-star teams as well as announcing awards for player of the year, defensive player of the year and coach of the year at its yearly banquet at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 30, at the Sheraton Uptown in Albuquerque.
