LLHS golfers qualify for state
The Los Lunas boys golf team took first place at the Valencia and Los Lunas Invitational golf tournament at the Isleta Eagle Golf Course Monday and Tuesday.
But more importantly, Tiger eighth-graders Dylan Gonzalez and Chesten Browning both earned their third legs and have qualified for the upcoming Class 4A State Golf Tournament on May 12 and 13 at the University of New Mexico’s South Course.
As a team, the Los Lunas boys beat out Valencia both days, winning 333-380 in Monday’s match play, and 351-387 on Tuesday.
Gonzalez shot a 77 while Browning shot a 79 on Monday to complete their three-leg qualifying for state. On Tuesday, Gonzalez collected a fourth leg, shooting a tournament-high 76. Browning and LLHS senior Colby Kerr both shot an 87 on Tuesday. Kerr finished with an 81 on Monday.
The Jaguars were led both days by seniors Tim Turnbow and Jason McClung. Turnbow shot a 91 on Monday and a 93 on Tuesday while McClung shot a 96 Monday and improved to a 90 on Tuesday.
On the girls side, the Valencia freshman duo of Paige Hunter and Emily Garcia led the way both days. Hunter shot a 102 on Monday followed by a 109 on Tuesday, while Garcia shot a 108 and a 118. Los Lunas’ top golfer on the girls side was Ashleigh Lyons, who shot a 128 Monday, followed by a 127 Tuesday.
Both the Los Lunas and Valencia squads will play at the Grants Invitational on Monday before returning to play at Belen High’s Abbie Paiz Invitational at the Tierra del Sol Golf Club next Thursday.
