Tigers, Jags battle for title
The race for first place in District 6-4A’s final softball season will likely come down to a rematch between top teams, No. 6 Valencia and No. 4 Los Lunas, next Tuesday after both teams posted a trio of league wins in the last week.
The Jaguars, who stand 15-9 and 7-0 in district, posted double digit, mercy-rule wins in their last three league games — a 10-0 win in six innings against Grants on Tuesday, April 15; a 15-4 win in five innings against Miyamura at home on Saturday; and a 16-4 win at Belen in sox innings Tuesday night.
Valencia’s only blemish in the last seven games came in Farmington on Thursday, where No. 9 Piedra Vista , which held off a late rally to beat the Jags 9-8.
Los Lunas, which is 9-1 in the last 10 games with the only loss coming at the hands of Valencia, started last week with a 17-1 win over Belen and followed that up with a double-header drubbing of Grants, beating the Lady Pirates 15-0 and 23-0 at home Thursday. The double-header was played to make up an away game at Grants that was postponed earlier in the year.
The Tigers then beat Gallup 8-0 at home Tuesday night to move to 17-5 on the season, 6-1 in District 6-4A play.
Los Lunas’ plays its next two games on the road — at No. 10 Santa Fe today and at Miyamura in Gallup on Saturday.
The Tigers could force a tie for the district lead with a win at Valencia Tuesday night, or the Jags could claim the title outright with a win there and a follow up win Grants Friday afternoon.
Los Lunas closes the regular season Friday afternoon at Belen.
The Eagles have hit hard times, losing nine of their last 10 to slide into a tie for last place in the league.
Belen (8-16, 1-6) led 2-0 going into the sixth inning at Gallup but surrendered a run in the sixth inning and two in the seventh to lose 3-2 to the Bengals. Belen hosts Miyamura Tuesday before closing the regular season at home against Los Lunas on Friday, May 2.
