With several choices possible for his collegiate career, Los Lunas High senior Jacob Holland chose basketball, signing a national letter of intent to play for Otero Junior College in La Junta, Colo. on Thursday, May 1.

Holland, who earned All-State honors in both football and hoops, said he had an offer to walk on at Division I New Mexico State but chose basketball, saying he was impressed with the Otero J.C. staff and facilities.

“I like the way they do things and they’ve had recent success feeding players to D-I and (Division II) programs,” said Holland. “It felt like a good atmosphere to be in.

Holland helped lead the Tigers to the Class 4A State championship game in basketball this past season and was a key element of LLHS’ football success the last two years, including a state title game appearance in 2013.

LLHS coach Travis Julian said he feels Holland will excel at the junior college.

“He’s got a tremendous work ethic, he put in time this (last off-season),” Julian said. “I think he’s going to get a lot better.”

“I just need to work and get better every day,” Holland said. “With a little bit of luck and winning, I think I’ll get noticed.”
