Great team efforts from the Belen boys and Los Lunas girls helped the two county teams secure team championships at the District 6-4A Championship Track Meet at Miyamura High School in Gallup on Saturday.

The Eagle boys finished without a single gold medalist, but were still able to beat cross-county rivals Valancia for first place by nine and a half points, 110-100.5. Belen junior Rock Barba was the high scoring boy’s individual scoring champ for the meet, racking up 29 points with second place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles, the long jump, the triple jump and third place in the high jump.

“Everybody contributed to what they should have done,” said BHS boys track coach Joseph E. Garcia, who added that the Eagles also got all their relay teams qualified for this week’s state track meet in Albuquerque. “We had a successful weekend, I’m really proud of the kids.”

Garcia also had high praise for Barba.

“For his first (season) out, he did a really good job and contributed to the team,” Garcia said.

Los Lunas finished fifth in the team competition with 54 points.

Valencia also won three of four relays, taking first in the 4×100-, 4×200- and 4×400-meter relay races.

Notable medalists on the boys side included Jared Garcia of Belen, who placed second in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs; Valencia’s Devon Sparkman (silver in the 100-meters, bronze in the 200-meters).

By sharp contrast, the Tigers girls’ 6 1/2 point win over crosstown rivals Valencia, a total of 130.5-123, came largely because of the efforts of several first-place finishers, led by Los Lunas sophomore Cera Chavez, who took home gold in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash, as well as the long jump.

Chavez also took home high scoring honors for the girls with 21 points, just edging out three athletes who finished with 20 points – LLHS teammate Mariah Doyle, Belen’s Arena Lewis and Valencia’s Carisma Lovato.
