A Los Lunas man was critically injured after this crash on Interstate 25 Wednesday morning. He was transported to an Albuquerque hospital by helicopter.

UPDATE:

An elderly Los Lunas man involved in a crash on Interstate 25 Wednesday morning has died as a result of his injuries. Boleslo Romero, 97, died at an Albuquerque hospital just a few hours after his vehicle was clipped by another driver.

Both vehicles were southbound when Davida Myers, 50, of Albuquerque, clipped Romero’s red Ford Ranger from the back. She was in the left lane driving a silver Buick sedan and he was in the right. Romero’s vehicle flipped several times, coming to rest on the west side of the highway. Myers’ car stopped in the center of the road, closing the interstate for several hours after the 8 a.m. incident.

Belen Police Chief Dan Robb said the crash is still under investigation with the assistance of New Mexico State Police.

“It’s hard to say about charges until the investigation is completed,” Robb said.

A two-vehicle crash that may have been caused by a distracted driver shut down southbound Interstate 25 for several hours Wednesday morning and critically injured an elderly man.
Belen Police Chief Dan Robb said an Albuquerque woman, about 50 years old, was southbound in the left lane driving a silver four-door Buick. She clipped a red Ford Ranger in the right lane in the rear of the vehicle, causing the truck to flip several times, Robb said.
The driver of the pickup, a 97-year-old Los Lunas man, was critically injured. He was taken to an Albuquerque hospital by helicopter. The chief said the female driver was also transported to a hospital by ambulance.
“Alcohol was not a factor and speed was not a factor,” Robb said. “I would describe her as a distracted driver.”
Robb said the crash happened just before 8 a.m. near the 198 mile marker.
The Buick stopped in the middle of the interstate, while the truck came to rest on its wheels on the west side of the road. Robb said the interstate was closed at the Los Lunas exit and southbound traffic was diverted east to Main Street.
The interstate was still closed as of 10 a.m., when the News-Bulletin spoke with Robb about the accident. He said it would remain closed until the investigation of the scene was completed.
