Area athletes earn post-season honors

Post-season awards began to come in for area softball players in the last few weeks and the first all-star week of the summer begins this week as well.

The Class 4A/5A Girls Basketball All-Star Game is scheduled for this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at West Mesa High School in Albuquerque. Playing on the South All-Stars will be seniors Karina Dow of Valencia and Kristian Sainz of Belen.

The 4A/5A All-Star Softball Series is also slated for this weekend, Friday and Saturday, at the Farmington Sports Complex. Los Lunas seniors Angela Duran, a pitcher, and Amanda Gonzales, the Tigers’ catcher, will play for the South All-Stars. Game times were not available at deadline. The Bob Ogas North/South All-Star Baseball Classic featuring the Class 4A/5A all-stars is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 13-14 at Apodaca Park in Las Cruces.

Valencia seniors Josh Baca and Tyler Kline were named to the South All-Star team that will play in the two-game series. For game times and ticket information, call (575) 649-9919 or (575)527-9046.

Belen seniors Katee Lucero and Gilbert Devlin, the Eagles’ number one singles players this past season, were both named to the South All-Star team for the NMHSCA All-Star Tennis series on Sunday through Tuesday, July 27-29, at the Jerry Cline Tennis Complex in Albuquerque. The event includes singles play as well as double and mixed doubles.

The District 6-4A All-District softball team was recently released and both district champions Valencia and runners-up Los Lunas were well represented.

The Jaguars placed 12 players total, seven on the first team alone.

First-teamers for VHS included Amber Baca, Adrianna Carbajal, Erin Sharpe, Krystal Vargas, Alexis Vigil, Alisha Vigil and Kayla Young.

Los Lunas finished with 11 players total and five on the first team: Angela Duran, Amanda Gonzales, Samantha Lucero, Vivian Lueras and Deanna Zamora.

Belen landed seven players total on the three lists, but just one player on the all-district first team, freshman Kira Mast.

Second team selections included Miranda Connelly, Marissa Kittredge and Justine Otero for Valencia; Miranda Jaramillo, Camille LaPorte, Analyssa Lopez and Analiese Medeiros for Los Lunas; and Emma Gonzales, Arena Lewis and Alexis Maes of Belen.

On the honorable mention list from Valencia County were Rachel McKinley and Ashley Young of Valencia; Taylor Sandoval and Hannah Wood of Los Lunas and a trio of Belen players — Mariah Armijo, Socorro Austin and Miykayla Roybal.
