Enchantment hosts District tournaments
Nineteen Little League baseball teams in five different divisions will converge on Los Lunas this weekend to try to capture the District 9 Little League title in five double-eliminiation championship tournaments being held at the Enchantment Little League complex in Los Lunas.
Play begins this afternoon and resumes Saturday after a break for the national Fourth of July holiday.
Host Enchantment is joined by Little League teams from Valencia County, from the Belen and Yucca Little Leagues, as well as Westgate and South Valley Little Leagues from the Albuquerque Metro area and Mount Taylor Little League from Laguna Pueblo.
With five teams in each, the Minor and Major divisions are the largest of the five tournaments being hosted through next week. Belen, Enchantment, South Valley, Westgate and Yucca Little Leagues are all vying for the District 9 title in those divisions with championship games scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday with an “if” game, if needed being played next Thursday, July 10. Minors begin at 6 p.m. today with South Valley taking on Westgate. Today’s Major division game features Belen versus South Valley.
Winners in each tournament advance to state competitions, which will begin next weekend and run through the week of July 21.
Games resume in Major and Minor brackets at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The winner advances to the state tournament at the Roadrunner Little League Complex in Albuquerque.
The 10-11 division is a three-team affair with South Valley and Westgate joining the only county team, Belen. Belen and Westgate begin the tourney at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the winner playing South Valley at 9 a.m. Sunday. The 10-11 division championship game is slated for 6 p.m. Tuesday with the “if” game at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The 10-11 division has a state tournament but no regional or national tournament. The 10-11 division state tournament will be hosted at the Rodriguez Park Complex in Las Vegas, N.M. by the La Plaza Little League.
Junior baseball is a four-team bracket, with the only area team, Enchantment, joining teams from Mt. Taylor, South Valley and Westgate. Junior baseball begins at 9 a.m. Saturday with the Enchantment-Westgate match up. The championship game in this division takes place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, with the “if” game at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The Junior division champion will travel to Cobre, N.M., just south of Silver City, where the Bayard Little League will host the state tournament
Senior baseball is a two-team, best two-out-of three affair between Westgate and Isleta. The championship for Seniors is slated for 2 p.m. on Sunday with an “if” game at 6 p.m. Sunday evening. The winner moves on to the state tournament, which is being hosted at the South Valley Little League Complex.
