Flag carriers were wonderful
Under clear blue skies, Los Lunas again put on a great Fourth of July parade. The people of Valencia County came out in great force to show their patriotism and love for their flag and their veterans.
Daniel D. Fernandez Post 9676 again led the way by providing the lead color guard and sponsoring the giant U.S. flag brought by veterans of American Legion Post 13 of Albuquerque. It takes many, many people to carry this giant U.S. flag 2 1/2 miles.
As commander, I would like to take the time to thank the more than 40 veterans and non-veterans for their patriotism. I also want to thank Helen Jaramillo and the 13 youth from the basketball youth league for their help; students, Aaron Medrano and Mikal Araujo for selling flags along the parade route; and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Sosa for providing water to these patriots.
After the parade, a fun time was had as we opened up our post to the public along with a barbecue for all.
Thanks must go out to, not only to the merchants that provided, but also those who helped put this on. So thanks, first and foremost, to Benny’s Restaurant of Bosque Farms and Milton Torres of Fiesta Tent Rentals. They have been with us since the beginning.
We served about 200 people and it takes many hard working people to put a project like this on, so thanks must go out to them. Also, David Valenzuela and his cooking crew, made up of Cheo Trujillo, Jack Aragon, Stanley Herrera and Hoss Otero.
Next, the servers, who helped distribute the food and keep everything orderly, Lillian McNabb, Margaret Gutierrez, Carol Aragon, Lina Otero and Tina Garley. These ladies are wonderful and this could not get done without them.
Last, but not least, thanks to editor Clara Garcia and her staff at the Valencia County News-Bulletin for posting our call for help with the giant flag and their support of all veterans.
Hope everyone had a wonderful Fourth of July.
Daniel D. Fernandez VFW Post 9676
Celebration was amazing
Thousands of people from Los Lunas and Valencia County came out to enjoy our Fourth of July festivities.
The parade was as patriotic as ever with more than 60 floats strolling down Main Street. At one point, the parade stretched from the Los Lunas Fire Department to the Valencia “Y.”
Thank you to all participants for your time and effort in creating such amazing floats. Thank you to Molzen/Corbin Associates and RAKS Building Supply for their kind sponsorships. Congratulations are in order for the parade winners: Catholic Daughters of San Clemente Court 2594, first place; Historic Mission San Antonio De Los Lentes, second place; Smith’s Food and Drug, third place; Valencia County Farm and Livestock Bureau, fourth place; Bust a Move Dance Center, Valencia High Football and Cheer, Los Lunas High School Football Team, Mariscos Altamar, Los Lunas High School Cheerleaders, Dance with Me Dance Studio and Jazzercise Fitness, Bosque Farms Church of Christ, all honorable mentions.
The celebration continued at Daniel Fernandez Memorial Park with great entertainment, family fun and, of course, fireworks. There are many people involved in making the events on the Fourth of July successful and I want to thank everyone for their contributions including, the mayor and council, Los Lunas Police Department, Los Lunas Fire Department, Valencia County Public Works and Fire Department, Gemini Fireworks, N.M. Event Pros, SpaceWalk, Micky Cruz, Gonzalo, Salvaged and all the food and merchandise vendors.
A very special thanks goes out to everyone in the recreation, open space, parks, facility maintenance and street divisions. For one long day, you all come together as one team and do a tremendous job making sure everything runs smoothly.
Lastly and most importantly my respect and gratitude to all those who serve and have served to protect our freedom and make the Fourth of July a great day to celebrate our freedom.
