Area swimming squads do well at district meets

The Los Lunas Stingrays and Belen Hurricanes swim teams both found success at their respective district meets on Thursday, July 17.

The Los Lunas girls had 32 swimmers win medals and finished second behind the Tennis Club of Albuquerque team 1506-1304. The Stingray boys finished with 15 medals, and Los Lunas finished third overall behind TCA and the Jewish Community Center Orcas at the TCA pool.

No team results were available for the Belen Hurricanes district meet, but the Hurricane girls finished with 13 medals while the boys finished with 14 medals in the meet, which was held at the Isleta Pueblo Recreation Center.

Belen was paced by Shaylee Silva, 10, and Damien Wood-Wilson, 9, who both won three gold medals apiece. MacKenzie Wood-Wilson, 11, Maya Montaño, 13, Trenton Griego, 12, and Elias Martinez, 14, all won three medals each – Wood-Wilson finishing with two golds and a silver; Griego with one gold and two silvers; Martinez with three silvers; and Montaño a gold, silver and bronze.

Joelle Trujillo, 12, Simone Sanchez 14, and Roman Prevot, 18, were the Hurricanes' other gold medalists. Trujillo also won a silver while Prevot added a bronze medal. Kade Benavidez, 12, also won two bronze medals.

The Stingray girls finished with an impressive 32 medals, including 13 gold medals and nine silvers, while the boys won 15 medals – mostly silver. Los Lunas' Chesten Browning, 13, won the boys' lone gold medal and took two bronze to pace the Stingrays along with Luke Sanchez, 11, who took home a silver and two bronze medals.

The Stingray boys won nine silver and six bronze medals.

Three Los Lunas girls won three gold medals each ― sisters Katie, 8, and Cloe Baldonado, 12, and Kyra Garnard, 12. Marrisa Candelaria also took home three medals, pocketing a gold, a silver and a bronze. Other gold medal winners included Miranda Candelaria, 18, Gabrielle Sanchez, 8, and Tatiana Jiron, 14. Candelaria and Jiron both added silver medals to their take as well.
