The recently appointed Los Lunas Schools district interim Superintendent Ron Williams abruptly rescinded his new position last week.

"I have some personal issues that I'm working through," Williams said. "I understand it's a surprise for a lot of people, but some of the issues that I'm facing right now came up just as abruptly and were totally unforeseen."

Under the circumstances, Williams didn't feel he could give the position 100 percent.

"I feel I have an obligation to the district to do better than that," he said. "So, I made a decision."

Williams is currently on vacation and doesn't know when he'll return to his job as assistant superintendent of curriculum.

He spoke with the superintendent cabinet staff, Dana Sanders, Brian Baca and Claire Cieremans, he said.

"They are totally supportive of me taking some time off in working through what I'm working through," Williams said.

Board of Education President Charles Tabet said Dana Sanders, assistant superintendent of staff and student services, will fill the position of interim superintendent until a permanent superintendent is hired.

"Anyone of the cabinet members would do a good job," Tabet said. "They're all very capable of doing the job, so I do appreciate Dana's stepping up … she's very capable of doing it. We're in good hands."

Sanders said she is honored to have been given the opportunity by the board.

"Because they have the confidence in me that we can continue to accomplish the goals of Los Lunas Schools," Sanders said.

She and the cabinet staff will attend school staff meetings and visit every school site before school begins, she said.

"As interim superintendant, I intend to carry out, to the best of my ability, the goals of the district and the board, and keep us on course for continued success," Sanders said. "Of course non of this would be possible without the dedicated people who work for Los Lunas Schools."

Former Superintendent Bernard Saiz submitted his notice of retirement in late June, saying he wanted to retire to improve his health and spend more time with his family.

Williams was appointed interim superintendent at the July 3 board meeting.

Both Sanders and Williams will apply for the permanent superintendent position, but timing will be a factor, Williams said.
