Land Grant Renaissance; Town of Tomé, and others, have new, historic mission

(Julia M. Dendinger-News-Bulletin photo) For more than two decades, Juan Maestas, of Jarales, has carried this cross to the top of Tomé Hill on Good Friday. This year, he made the climb up the rocky hill in his bare feet.

A nearly full moon had just nestled onto the mesa west of the Rio Grande early Good Friday morning when very soon, a bright April sun blossomed over the eastern crest of the Manzano Mountains, lighting up the path for a barefoot man carrying a seven-foot wooden cross up the western slope of Tomé Hill.
