Eagles, Tigers and Jags finish 1-2-3 at district

Saturday's District 6-4A Championship Wrestling Meet at Gallup High School was a complete sweep for Valencia County schools, as well as a resounding triumph for Belen, which beat out arch rivals Los Lunas 219.5 to 173.5 to claim first place in the six-team event..

The Los Lunas girls and boys teams placed low in the standings at the District 2 Swim Meet Saturday, but both teams were able to qualify relay squads, ensuring that the Tigers will participate at the State Swim Meet Friday and Saturday at Albuquerque Academy.

Bad night for Belen keeps Gallup in 2nd

The Belen boys had a chance to make the District 6-4A race a little more interesting last week but were unable to complete the comeback at home, losing 67-60 Tuesday night, Feb. 11 to visiting Gallup.

Drought of doom

The Valencia girls basketball team experienced a drought Tuesday night against Belen — and the dry spell burned down the Jaguars chances of earning the No. 2 seed in next week's District 6-4A tournament.

The Los Lunas boys basketball team moved closer to a No. 1 seed in the upcoming District 6-4A tournament this past weekend with a pair of road wins over county rivals Valencia and Belen.

BHS 2nd at Card Classic

The Belen wrestling team broke a team scoring record at the Cardinal Classic over the weekend, finishing with 302 points and six placers in the Gold Bracket to take second place in the tournament. They finished just behind Piedra Vista at the 25-team tournament at Robertson High School in Las Vegas, N.M.

The Belen and Los Lunas boys basketball teams were tied 7-7 about five minutes into the first quarter of their game last Thursday night at Los Lunas High School.

Jaguars bounce back, beat Miyamura

The Los Lunas girls basketball team opened District 6-4A play with a pair of wins last week and added two non-district wins over the weekend, while the Valencia girls rebounded from their district opening loss at Gallup with a win over GHS' crosstown rivals Miyamura, Friday night.

Tigers tame Jaguars in dual match

Because of a pair early forfeits, there wasn't much chance that host Valencia would be able to come back against Los Lunas in the two teams' dual match at Valencia High school on Wednesday, Jan 15.

If any team in District 6-4A thought that Los Lunas' four loses this season were an indication that the Tigers may no longer be the favorite for the league title in 2014, they may want to re-think that after Tuesday night.
