Tigers tame Jaguars in dual match

Because of a pair early forfeits, there wasn't much chance that host Valencia would be able to come back against Los Lunas in the two teams' dual match at Valencia High school on Wednesday, Jan 15.

If any team in District 6-4A thought that Los Lunas' four loses this season were an indication that the Tigers may no longer be the favorite for the league title in 2014, they may want to re-think that after Tuesday night.

The Will to Win

The Valencia girls basketball team continued their historic roll this week, winning a pair of games at home early in the week while the Belen girls traveled to the Four Corners and came away from the weekend trip with a third-place trophy.

With the ceiling lights off and a single light suspended above the mat, the atmosphere leading up to the dual wrestling match between Belen and Los Lunas was as dramatic.

A look at future foes of county high school teams

Now that we've looked back at 2013, it's time to look forward to 2014. Specifically, let's look at the three high schools that will be district opponents for the Belen Eagles, Los Lunas Tigers and Valencia Jaguars in the new Class 5A next fall season — the Santa Teresa Desert Warriors, Chaparral Lobos and Las Cruces Centennial Hawks.

A Year of Milestones

In a possible preview of the upcoming district girls basketball battles, the Valencia girls basketball team beat cross-town rivals Los Lunas girls 42-36 in overtime in the championship of the Alamogordo VFW Invitational on Saturday.

The Los Lunas boys basketball team got revenge for a loss and picked up a tournament title in the process while the Valencia squad suffered a trio of set backs at the Alamogordo VFW Invitational over the weekend at Alamogordo High School.

Los Lunas, Belen show strength in Deming Duals

The unusual format of the Deming Duals wrestling meet kept the Los Lunas and Belen wrestling teams from bringing home any hardware collectively, but both teams performed well at the meet, held at Deming High School on Saturday, Dec. 20.
