Faulty microphones and an unexpected interruption didn't stop the show from going on at this year's Belen Schools District Talent Competition last week at Belen High School.

About 400 people turned out for the show, which featured 23 performances from Belen elementary, middle and high school students. From Ozzy Osborne to Michael Jackson, the stage was busy with entertainment.

Elementary winners were the Dennis Chavez Dancers, first place; and La Merced Dancers, second place. Secondary school winners were Tom Starnes, first place; Nick Garcia, second place; and third place went to Jericho Miranda and Molly Chavez. "The Daft Girls" won the grand prize, which was $100.

Organizers of the show said all those who participated were a good representation of the area talent.

Jessica Parham, who is the school's yearbook and newspaper instructor, said the event raised about $1,000 that will go toward new video cameras and to help with the cost of this year's yearbook production.

The camera will be used in the digital media program, which is in the dual credit program at the University of New Mexico-Valencia Campus. The group learns the basics of film and produces short films and commercials.

"This was probably the best show we have had in Belen (in the past three years)," said Parham, who helped organize the event. "The talent here really helps describe how we are as a community."

Senior Angelea Maestas has been in yearbook for three years, and said the show wasn't easily put together.

"It's just a lot of work," said Maestas. "But we got it done."

Next year, that work might feel a little easier since the school is expected to get new state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment by the spring of 2010 that could eliminate faulty equipment issues.

Parham said she wants increased involvement in next year's show, and more community sponsorships for the prizes for students. In addition, she said she wants more groups from outside the high school to participate in the event.

Still, Maestas said she thinks this year's event was the perfect venue for students to display their talents.

"The show is an opportunity for people to express themselves."
