Raising awareness about breast cancer brought out the artists in Los Lunas Curves members.

Several members of the fitness club entered a contest of brassiere creations to express their concern about breast cancer, breast cancer research funding and mammography.

The first place winner, Theresa Voss, named her bra creation, "Madonna." It is made with purple glass and brass.

The second place winner, Kathryn Camarena, titled hers, "The Fringe Benefits," and decorated her bra with fringe and tassels.

Caramena said she grew up in the 60s, hence the fringe. "Women of my generation are of that age where we need to get tested regularly. I think early detection is important," Carmena said. "Mammograms and self exams. Women tend to take care of everybody else first, and not themselves.

"But we need to take care of ourselves first so we're around to take care of our loved ones."

Third place winner, Nancy Jaramillo, called hers, "Pretty in Pink," using pink ostrich feathers, pink lights, and tiny red and pink breast cancer awareness ribbons.

"We would love to have people come in to see the art," said Los Lunas Curves co-owner Grace Sanchez. "It's amazing how much talent and creativity there is in this County. And the women had a blast."

New membership fees will be waived until October 31st for those who bring in a copy of their recent mammogram, or make a donation to the American Cancer Society at any participating Curves.

The public is invited to come in to view the bra art at Curves, located at 121 Don Diego, and if possible, donate to breast cancer research. Call 865-5191 for hours.
