1921 - 2009
Charles C. Chesser, age 88, a resident of Belen, passed away on Wednesday, July 29. Mr. Chesser proudly served in the United States Navy.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 2 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Riverside Funeral Home of Belen, 418 W. Reinken Ave. An online guest register is available at www.riversideofbelen.com.
Philip Johnson 1928 - 2009
Philip L. Johnson, age 81, a resident of Belen, went home to his Lord and Savior on Monday, July 27.
Phil attended God's House Church in Albuquerque and was also a member of Redeemers A.M.E. Zion Church in Connecticut. Phil also proudly served his country in the United States Navy.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Mildred Johnson; two sisters, Tryphia Johnson and Muriel O'Neil; one brother, Hubert Johnson and a daughter, Leatha Johnson.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 53 years, Gladyce L. Johnson; daughter, Phyllis Washington and husband, James of Bristol, Conn.; son, Tregg Johnson and wife, Pamelisa of Belen; sister, Jesse Silva of New Britain, Conn.; brother, Harold Johnson and wife, Emma of Southington, Conn.; brother-in-law, Johnie Floyd of Rome, Ga.; 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
A celebration of Phil's life will be held on Monday, Aug. 3, at 1 p.m. at God's House Church, 2335 Wyoming Blvd, NE, Albuquerque, with Bishop Michael Shelby officiating. Interment will be private. Hipolito Romero 1928-2009
Hipolito B. Romero, age 80, a resident of Riley (Santa Rita), N.M., passed away on Wednesday, July 29.
He was a member of San Miguel Catholic Church, in Socorro, and a Post Commander for the American Legion of Barstow, Calif. He proudly served in the Army Air Corps for 12 years as a Radio Operator. Hipolito retired from El Toro Marine Base in Santa Ana, Calif. as a Federal Civil Service Employee. He was very artistic and enjoyed woodworking. He was preceded in death by his parents, Santiago and Elvia Bustamante Romero and sister, Casimira Romero.
Hipolito is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Katherine Sue Slack Romero; five loving brothers, George J. Romero, Joe Romero and wife, Lily, James Romero and wife, Emily, Vivian Romero and wife, Virginia and Donald Johnson and wife, Judy. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and step-children.
A viewing will be held at Romero Funeral Home Chapel, on Friday, July 31, at 5:30 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 6 p.m. A final visitation will be held at Santa Rita Catholic Church in Riley, on Saturday, Aug. 1, at 9:30 a.m. with a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Santa Rita Catholic Cemetery.

L. Truitt Stanford 1929-2009
L. Truitt Stanford, age 80, a resident of Belen, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away Thursday, July 30, after a brief struggle with cancer.
He was born in Clovis, to the late Truman and Rebecca Stanford. Truitt was a 50 year member of First Baptist Church of Belen, serving as a Sunday school teacher, usher and other jobs.
He proudly served his country in the US Air Force as an A&E instructor. After leaving the Air Force, he and his wife, Mary, moved to Belen, where he spent 17 years working for the Santa Fe Railroad.
In 1974, Truitt went to work for the Southern Peru Copper Corp. in Peru for eight years. Upon returning to the United States, he went into the car business with his brother Harvey in Dallas. Truitt and Mary retired back to Belen in 1995.
He was also preceded in death by his step-mother, Jettie Stanford, and brother-in-law, Robert Marshall. Truitt is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mary Stewart Stanford; two daughters, Petresia Manso and husband, Nicholas and Sandra Wilson and husband, Eric; one son, Dwain Stanford and wife, Terri; five grandchildren, Randi Lynne Sanchez and husband, Matthew, Travis Stanford and wife, Rebekah, Tracy Lynchard and husband, Daniel, Clifford Wilson and Katelyn Wilson; two great-granddaughters, Haley and Ashlee and baby Stanford due in October; brother, Harvey Stanford and wife, Linda; two sisters, Maxine Marshall and Patsy Nicholas and husband Jerry and sister-in-law, Frances Scott and husband, Charlie of Oklahoma. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

Wanda Stephens 1931-2009
Wanda Joan White Stephens, 77, went to be with her Lord Wednesday, July 29, after a valiant battle with melanoma cancer.
She is survived by her daughter, Sheree, and husband, Rick Osborn of Bosque Farms; son, Fredric (Ric) and wife, Marcia Stephens of Grand Rapids, Mich.; beloved grandchildren, Leslie Lea and husband, Steven Scott Swain, Taylor Lane, Lexington Leigh, Samantha Lauren and Mackenzie Hunter Stephens; and cousins, Richard and Patti Moore and family in New Castle, Ind..
She was preceded in death by her mother, R. Berneice (Bee) White; father, Fred R. White; brother, Hugh Fredrick White; and grandson, Hunter Fredric Stephens.
Born November 5, 1931, in New Castle, Ind., she also lived in Mooreland, Muncie, and New Haven, Ind. Wanda was a graduate of New Haven High School and of Ball State University with a bachelor's degree in music, and a master's degree in counseling. She worked in church music, Christian education with youth, sang in church choirs, taught Sunday school and directed hand-bell choirs, her great love.
Jokingly she called herself a "dingaling," as did many of her family and friends, especially Marge West and Emily Young. She was s deacon and an elder in the Presbyterian Church. Wanda love Albuquerque, coming here in 1961, and the beauty of the Southwest.
Wanda and her family moved to Peralta in 1972. She was an avid UNM Lobo fan and a Lobo Club fundraiser. She loved all kinds of sport, but especially basketball. She and her family loved horses and raised Appaloosas, Palominos and Buckskins. She was a long time member of AQHA, PHBA, ABRA, ApHA, NMPEA and NMBHA.
Wanda received great joy and spiritual direction from the classes with Bible Study Fellowship, Sunday night "John" Study and her Thursday morning Ladies Bible Study.
She was a member of the Peralta Memorial United Methodist Church's Crafty Ladies as well as the Sunday school director until she could no longer continue. According to Wanda's wishes, her family and friends invite you to a celebration of her life Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at 11 a.m., at Peralta Memorial United Methodist Church, 25 Wesley Rd.

Genaro Valdez-Contreras 1986 - 2009
Genaro Valdez-Contreras, age 22, passed away on Tuesday, July 28.
Genaro is survived by his parents, Israel Valdez and Rocie Conteraras and his siblings, Gloria, Catalina, Sotero, Felipa, Rocio and Erika Valdez, all of Mexico; cousin, Ventura Estrada of Los Lunas, and numerous other relatives and friends.
A viewing will be held on Monday, Aug. 3, from 5 p.m. in the chapel of Riverside Funeral Home of Belen, 418 W.
