For the first time since 1963, the Belen Eagle football team will play for a championship.
The Eagles, now 12-0 for the first time in school history, ended the season for the Aztec Tigers on Friday, gaining the advantage early and using a punishing rushing game for a 58-19 victory in a Class 4A semifinal game at BHS.
A coin flip after the game gave Belen the home field for the 4A championship game against Goddard. Belen will host that game on Friday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. It will be only the second title game appearance in school history for Belen football, which has never won a state championship.
Goddard crushed Volcano Vista, 55-14, in Albuquerque on Friday in the other 4A semifinal.
Danny Jaramillo, Belen's junior tailback, rushed for 284 yards Friday on only 22 carries, scoring three times.
Steven Contreras scored two touchdowns and rushed for 92 yards for Belen, as the Eagles led 31-7 at the half. Orlando Castillo scored the Eagles' other touchdown on a 46-yard end-around.
Dylan Barba scored a pair of touchdowns for the Eagles, including a 98-yard scamper on the seecond-half kickoff that seemed to be the backbreaker for the Tigers.
The Eagles dominated the yardage battle, racking up 484 yards on the ground and outgaining the Tigers (8-4) by a 556 to 329 margin.
Belen also won 63-34 at Aztec in September.
Aztec quarterback Brycson King completed 22-of-40 passes for 309 yards in a losing effort, but he was intercepted by twice, and the Eagle defense shut down several promising drives. Ezekiel Gonzales and Castillo had the picks for Belen.
Jake Espinoza caught six of King's passes, including second-half touchdown catches of five and 43 yards. He also had a one-yard dive for the Tigers' other score. Tylin Hirsch caught eight passes for 95 yards for the Tigers.
