Rio Abajo Days features roping, cars

Rio Abajo Days begin Saturday morning and continue through Sunday night. Admission is free. The following events hosted by the Belen Chamber of Commerce and the City of Belen are part of this celebration of the Rio Grand Valley and its heritage.

Saturday, Oct. 11

Valencia County Fairgrounds:

  • Grand entry in American dress, 10 a.m.

  • Arts and crafts show, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Team roping 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Mule and donkey events, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Draft horse show, noon.

  • National 4-H Week open house at fairgrounds, 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Chile cook-off, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Cowboy barbecue dinner 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the Fairgrounds, North Exhibit Hall. Music provided by The Rockin W Wranglers.

    Saturday in Downtown Belen, Becker Street

  • Custom car show, 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

    Activities and Events:

  • Hot Wheels races (all ages) 2:30 p.m.

  • Hula Hoop contest, 4 p.m.

  • Hula Hoop contest and Hot Wheels races 5:30 p.m.

    Entertainment:

  • Applause School of Dance, 2 p.m.

  • S & A Dance Academy, 3:30 p.m.

  • Stars Dance Academy, 4:30 p.m.

  • Lori's Boardwalk Gymnastics, 5 p.m.

  • Renee Antoinette's School of Dance, 6 p.m.

  • Street Dance, feature music from The Untouchables and an Oldies dress-up contest, 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

    Sunday, Oct. 12

    Valencia County Fairgrounds

  • Pancake breakfast at the Sheriff's Posse concession stand, 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.

  • Cowboy church service, 9 a.m.

  • Grand entry in cowboy dress, 10 a.m.

  • Arts and crafts show, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Team roping 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Kids watermelon and pumpkin events, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Steer raffle drawing, 4 p.m.

  • Bull-riding invitational, 5 p.m.

  • Equine gymkhana, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
