Online Advanced Placement classes available from APS

Students from across the state will have the opportunity to enroll in free online exam reviews as they prepare for tests in their Advanced Placement classes next month.

"I am very pleased that the Albuquerque Public Schools and the New Mexico Learning Network were able to join forces to offer this exciting educational opportunity to students not only in Albuquerque, but across the state," said Albuquerque Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Everitt.

She noted that the district had been working to make the online reviews available to APS students and by joining with the Learning Network worked out a deal to offer the reviews to all New Mexico students at no charge.

"We have teamed with an established provider of online exam reviews, the Florida Virtual School, to provide this opportunity and to promote academic achievement for New Mexico students," said Dr. Brian Ormand of New Mexico State University, director of the New Mexico Learning Network.

Ormand emphasized that the online reviews are open to all public high school, charter school, home school and private school students in the state.

"I applaud the leadership of Albuquerque Public Schools and the New Mexico Learning Network," said Secretary of Education Veronica C. García. "I encourage students and teachers to utilize this review service, especially in light of our high school redesign legislation signed by the governor last week that increases rigor and relevancy of high school coursework."

The national AP® Examinations are scheduled for May. Students and teachers can register for the free online review at: http://aptestreview.flva.net/aptreg.nsf/registrationAPT.

The online reviews for teachers and students include test taking strategies for the AP® test, actual student work samples with explanations for graded entries and the grading standards, along with opportunities for applying those standards to student work.

The review also provides access to practice tests, essay prompts, multiple choice assessments, and study resources.

Online exam reviews are available for the following courses: U.S. history, calculus AB, English literature and composition, English language and composition, European history, Spanish, biology, macroeconomics, art history, and U.S. government and politics.

Students who enroll in Advanced Placement courses and pass the exams are eligible to receive college credit.

This initiative highlights the State of New Mexico's commitment to advancing online educational (eLearning) opportunities. Governor Bill Richardson and the New Mexico Legislature recently passed legislation creating the framework for a statewide eLearning system. To learn more, visit www.nmln.net .
