Girl Scouts have new cookie ideas

News-Bulletin reports

If you haven't picked up a box of your favorite Girl Scout cookies, time is running out. The annual Girl Scout Cookie sales are in full swing, and your favorite Thin Mints, Carmel deLites and Thanks-A-Lots will be available until March 30.

Girls ages 6 to 17 learn valuable lessons of goal setting, team work, budgeting, and public speaking as they're trying to sell their cookies. The experience also builds their self-confidence and helps them to develop their own personal leadership style.

This year, there are several ways for the community to support this activity.

The Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails is encouraging businesses to treat their staff to a "Cookies and Milk Break." Participating businesses purchase one sample box of each cookie flavor and enough milk for their staff to enjoy. A Girl Scout troop will host the "break" while giving staff an opportunity to buy cookies as they enjoy tasting those sweet treats.

The community service project "Girl Scouts Share" encourages troops to find out what is most important to the girls in their troop and identify a local agency that is meeting this need. As girls sell cookies, they ask customers if they would like to purchase a box for the selected agency. After all the cookies are gathered, the Girl Scout troop will deliver the cookies to the agency. This year, the Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails and Blue Star Mothers have teamed up to ensure serviceman and women will be able to enjoy these treats away from home.

The Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails is hoping to sell more than 68,000 cases, or 816,432 boxes, of cookies this year. Each box costs $3.50.
