Father and son shot, recovering at hospital

Clara Garcia News-Bulletin Staff Writer; cgarcia@news-bulletin.com

Belen A father and son are recovering from gunshot wounds in an Albuquerque hospital this week as detectives are investigating what led up to the shooting.

Valencia County Sheriff Rene Rivera said deputies were called to 908 Martha Jean Drive by neighbors reporting hearing shots in the area. When the deputies arrived at the mobile home, they found two people, 47-year-old Daniel Tavaschi and his 25-year-old son, Daniel Jr., suffering from gunshot wounds.

The sheriff said both men were found in the hallway of the home, both alive and conscious.

"We found two subjects, one with multiple gunshots, and the other was a self-inflicted gunshot," Rivera said. "It appears that the father shot the son and then shot himself."

According to the sheriff, no one else was in the home at the time of the shooting. He said both men were transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque.

"It appears that they were fighting over tools," Rivera said. "We've had incidents at the house before."

Daniel Tavashi, who suffered multiple gunshots to his torso area, is listed in serious but stable condition, and his father, who had a single gunshot wound to his chest, is listed in serious condition. Rivera said that the father is in more serious condition than the son.

The sheriff said that charges are pending the completion of the investigation.
