Las Maravillas Valencia County Sheriff's detectives are continuing their investigation into what they believe is a murder-suicide that occurred early Monday afternoon.

Detective Lt. James Purdy said a man called 911 at about 12:30 p.m. saying he had accidentally shot his girlfriend and was going to shoot himself. The detective said the dispatcher, who had kept the telephone line open, had heard at least one gunshot.

When deputies arrived at the home, located at 23 Ash Place in the Los Maravillas subdivision southeast of Los Lunas, they found a woman, identified as 53-year-old Terri Every, and a man dead of apparent gunshot wounds along with two dogs one of which was a beagle that had also been shot and killed. Every, the man and the two dogs were all found in the living room, Purdy said.

The identity of the man, who was also 53 years old, has not been released pending notification of his next of kin. The detective said Every and the man had been living together at the Las Maravillas home.

"It does appear to be a murder-suicide," Purdy said. "We have no previous records of domestic violence between the two of them, and the scene doesn't indicate anything (of that nature) was going on. There has to be something that aggravated the situation, but I don't know what it was and we're still in the early stages of the investigation."

Purdy said a handgun was discovered near the body of the man.
