Deaths and funerals

Jewel D. Allan
1912-2008

Jewel Dean Civerolo Allan, 95, passed away May 6, in Albuquerque.

Jewel was a long time resident of Los Lunas and Gallup. Jewel was born August 8, 1912, in Gilmore Okla. She had nine siblings, and is survived by two of her sisters, her twin Opal of Poteau, Okla., and Lorene, also Poteau.

Jewel moved to the southwest in the early 1930's where she was one of the famed Harvey Girls, serving both in the Grand Canyon and Gallup. In 1939, she married Art Civerolo and settled in Gallup. This marriage produced four daughters.

Art passed away in 1969. Jewel married Robert H. "Bob" Allan on Christmas in 1971. In 1994, Bob and Jewel moved to Los Lunas to be closer to their family. Bob passed away in 1998.

Jewel belonged to the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Los Lunas. She was a member of the Eastern Star and the BPO Does.

Jewel is survived by her four daughters, Nancy Minor and her husband, Gene of Aztec, N.M., Linda Hamilton and her husband, Tommy of Albuquerque, Ellen Tomberlin and her husband, Larry of Los Lunas and Jolene Day and her husband, Phil of Albuquerque; and one son Pete Allan and his wife, Diana of Albuquerque. Jewel is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Karen Isaacs.

Visitation will be held at the Aspen Funeral home, 1935 Juan Tabo N.E. from 2 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7. Reverend Robert Mundy will conduct services on Thursday, May 8, at 2 p.m., at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church on the New Mexico State Los Lunas Campus. Internment will be at Sunset Memorial Park in Gallup on Friday May 9.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations made to the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 2489, Los Lunas, N.M., 87031-2489, or to the Poteau Cemetery in Poteau, Okla. Aspen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Antoinette Arias
1967 - 2008

Our Antoinette Angela Arias, of 40 years of age, a resident of Belen passed away on May 1. She was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. Our mother, daughter, sister, cousin, tia, niece and friend has gone with our Lord and Savior.

Antoinette is survived by her two sons, Jose Arias and Roberto Montoya; her companion Fermin Zamora and his two sons; Robert and Danny Zamora. She also survived by her mother, Bonnie Arias of Roswell and her father, Joe A. Arias and his wife, Berlinda of Belen; her brother, Rito Arias and wife, Nancy; two sisters; Jessica Arias and Monica Arias and her companion, Juan Carlos Baca. Also surviving her are three nieces; Amanda Horton, Araceli Arias, Julissa Arias and nephew Lucas Baca.

Antoinette was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents Pedro and Pabla Arias and maternal grandparents Jim and Feliz Randall.

A viewing was held on Tuesday, May 6 in the chapel of Riverside Funeral Home of Belen, followed by a rosary. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church with Father Stephen Schultz officiating. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Leonard Arias, T.J. Montano, Robert Molinar, James Garcia, Bobby Lee Watson and Johnny Arias. Honorary Pallbearers will be Frances Montoya, Debra Miranda, Lynn Zamora, Suzie Vigil, Denise Horton and Sharon Sanchez. Virginia Armijo
1955-2008

Virginia Armijo, 52, a life-long resident of Belen, has gone home to be with her Lord and Savior and her parents, Juan and Urcisinia (Padilla) Marquez, on Monday, May 5. She was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church.

Virginia loved to dance, and everyone would say that she was a beautiful dancer. She truly loved her family, and was always looking forward to having family and friends around her.

Virginia is survived by her loving daughter, Michelle Armijo and boyfriend, James Lucero and his mother; and Michelle's guardian angels, Maria Medrano and Lois Brooks; sister, Sylvia Gurule and husband, Joaquin; nephew, Ruben Gurule and wife, Roberta; niece, Lennie Gurule and boyfriend, Gilbert Edward Rael, Jr.; great-nieces, Arianna Marie and Katarina Lolia Gurule and her wonderful and very dear friend, Danny Melendez. She also leaves behind many other loving family members and friends.

A viewing will be held at Romero Funeral Home Chapel, on Thursday, May 8, at 5:30 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 6 p.m. A final visitation will be held on Friday, May 9, at 8:30 a.m. with a funeral Mass to be celebrated at 9 a.m. with Father Stephen Schultz presiding. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens.

Ronda Lu Duncan
1937-2008

Ronda Lu (Reintjes) Duncan, 70, born in Linton, Ind., and a resident of Belen, passed away on Sunday, May 4.

She was born to Irvin and Lucille (Carr) Reintjes. The family moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1941. Her mother worked as a schoolteacher and her father was an electrical engineer. Ronda maintained excellent grades in school and was involved in dance and music. In 1952 the family moved to Albuquerque. The family became charter members of the Hoffman Town Baptist Church.

In 1954, she met Bill Duncan at Highland High School when both were involved in the marching band and concert orchestra. She played first chair alto saxophone and Bill played first chair trombone. Their first date was at Highland Theater where they watched White Christmas with Bing Crosby. Ronda and Bill married on April 4, 1955 at Hoffman Town Baptist Church. Bill joined the Navy in July 1955, and they moved to San Diego, Calif.

While he was out playing sailor, Ronda kept busy raising five boys. She worked with the Boy Scouts for 20 years, from den mother to adult leader training. She worked at Moskatels/Michaels as a floral designer and did the stores displays for 15 years. Ronda was active in the Casa De Oro Baptist Church in Spring Valley, Calif. She worked in the pulpit committee, chairman of the music committee, directed the choir, wedding coordinator for the church, did all of the church decorating and sang in the church choir.

She lived in the San Diego area from 1955 to 1961 until the Navy took them to Great Lakes, Ill., for one year, then to Charleston, S.C., for one year, then back to San Diego, until Bill retired in 1975. They remained in San Diego until 2002 when they decided to move to Belen, where they spent the next six years working on the house and landscaping. Ronda did the design work while Bill did all the manual labor. Ronda crocheted toys for the missions for many years until two years ago.

She enjoyed camping, cooking with Bill and her family, and the wildlife surrounding her from the birds, trees, and plants. Ronda loved her animals and when vacationing they were always with them. While they would be traveling to visit family in their RV, they enjoyed stopping at different areas for sightseeing and photo opportunities.

Ronda is survived by her husband, William "Bill" Duncan; five sons, Douglas, Bryan, Hugh, Lyle and Russell Duncan; six daughters-in-law, Nancy, Jackie, Janice, Ginger, Monica and Donna; sister and brother-in-law, Jenan and Kenneth Elrod; nine grandchildren, Doug Jr., Crissy, Michael, Matthew, Jessica, Michelle, Nikki, Eric, Tyler, and one on the way; five step grandchildren, Michael, Victoria, Jennifer, Jackie and Cody and seven great-grandchildren, Jay, Levi, Kiara, Madison, Jonathan, Briana, Keith and one on the way and great-aunt, Farol Christenberry-Keller. She is also survived by one niece, Kendra; great-niece, Kyla; great-nephew, Kollyn; great-great nephew, Landen and two cousins, Dawn and Kenneth.

A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Los Chavez, on Saturday, May 10, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Boyd Morerod officiating. Interment will follow at Terrace Grove Cemetery. Sign Ronda's online register book at www.romerofuneralhomenm.comRomero Funeral Home, 609 N. Main St., Belen.

Margarita Luna
1918-2008

Margarita Luna, 89, of Mountainair, passed away on Thursday May 1, in Los Lunas. Margarita was born October 17, 1918 to Gregorio and Francisquita (Serna) Lovato in Red Canyon. Margarita was a lifelong resident of Mountainair and was a member of the St. Alice Catholic Church and the Sacred Heart League.

Margarita was preceded in death by her parents; husband Guadelupe Luna; daughter Bernice Luna; granddaughter Valerie Garcia; sister Josefita Chavez; and brother Benito Lovato.

She is survived by sons, Arturo Luna, Felipe Luna, Jerry Luna and Henry Luna, all of Mountainair; Roger Luna of Bosque, and Greg Luna of Belen, David Luna of Albuquerque; daughters, Rosemary Alderete of Mountainair, Josephine Potter of Belen, Carla A. Lente of Belen; sister, Clarinda Chavez of California; 24 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

A viewing was held Monday, May 5, at the Harris-Hanlon Mortuary Chapel in Mountainair and a rosary was recited at St. Alice Catholic Church in Mountainair. A Mass was celebrated Tuesday, May 6, at St. Alice Catholic Church in Mountainair. Father Ron Stone officiated. Interment followed at the La Cienaga Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Lawrence Garcia, Pat DeLeon, Justin Luna, Aaron Luna, David Luna, Christopher Anaya, Alex Garcia, Ben Luna, John Luna and Arty Luna. Annie Marquez
1912-2008

Annie (Gurule) Marquez, 95, born to the late Macedonio Gurule and Marie (Baca) Gurule, passed away on Monday, May 5.

She was a life-long resident of Adelino, and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tomé. Annie's life revolved around her husband, children and grandchildren. She saw to it that everything ran smoothly from getting chores done to getting the kids ready for school, cooking and also taking care of her beautiful flower garden. Annie learned her cooking skills from her mother, and all the family would gather at holidays or just to come over and enjoy her cooking and be together.

She entered the flowers that she grew in the Valencia County Fair, and throughout the years won many ribbons. She also loved to sew, and there was nothing she didn't know how to make or mend.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, Prudencio Marquez; one daughter, Rachel; and two sons, Ubaldo and Albert Marquez. Annie is survived by her four loving sons, Joe Marquez and wife, Charlene of Vail, Colo., Don (Macedonio) Marquez of Adelino, David Marquez and wife, Kathy of Rio Rancho, and Prudencio Marquez, Jr. and wife, Gloria of Albuquerque; her sister, Elena Calles and husband, Elias of Adelino; 13 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews.

Her family would like to thank all the staff of the Bee Hive Nursing Home, in Los Lunas, and the Vista Care Hospice for their loving and special care given to their mother throughout her last few months.

All services will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tomé, beginning with a visitation on Thursday, May 8, at 5:30 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 6 p.m. A final visitation will be held on Friday, May 9, at 10 a.m. with a funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. with Father Jose Hernandez presiding. Interment will take place at a later date at the Tomé Catholic Cemetery.

Karen Marie Ziene
1945-2008

Karen Marie Zeine, 62, a resident of Highland Meadows, passed away at her home on Friday, May 2.

She worked for Wal-Mart and was most recently employed with the Belen Wal-Mart Superstore. Karen loved her job and was a valued employee. Her second family was her many friends at Wal-Mart.

She loved to travel and she and her husband, Richard traveled to the extent of wearing out two motor homes. Karen loved the outdoors and camping and fishing were high on her list of activities that she really enjoyed. She was a wonderful cook, and many of her dishes she made for family and friends were always a treat. Her daughter, Wendy would always call her asking for her recipes. Karen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and her family was her whole life. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Steve and Margaret (Wick) Nemeth and her son, Scott Zeine. Karen is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Richard Zeine; three daughters, Wendy Kanieski of Conneaut, Ohio, Pamala Quimet and Victoria Lynn, both of California; three grandsons, Jon Bertrand and wife, Nikki, Steve Bertrand and Keith Kanieski; and two loving great-grandchildren, Ryan Kanieski and Payton Bertrand. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Edward Zeine and wife, Elaine and sister-in-law, Helen and sister-in-law, Diane Flanuski.

All services will be held at Romero Funeral Home Chapel, beginning with a public viewing, on Wednesday, May 7, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A final viewing will be held on Thursday, May 8, at 12 p.m. with a funeral service at 1 p.m. with Pastor Boyd Morerod officiating.
