Congratulations, Ms. Chavez!

OURVIEW

Those of us who've met Mildred Chavez were not surprised to find that she'd been named Principal of the Year for the state of New Mexico. Katherine Gallegos Elementary School has been a wonderful place where students and parents seem to be having a great time learning the basics. It's a place where there are many smiles.

That's notable in a large school such as KGE, with a population of more than 700 currently. That's at the outside limit for elementary schools, which are best when they're a small community. A new westside school is in the works, and Chavez will be going on to helm it. That's a comforting thought someone with the experience and know-how that Chavez offers will be a vital part of getting everything organizing and working well.

We'd like to congratulate Ms. Chavez and thank Denise Cannon, the teaching coach who nominated her. Our educators all too often aren't thanked properly for all the good they do. It's nice to see one of them getting a bit of credit that's due them.

Congratulations, Ms. Chavez. It's a well-deserved honor.
