Belen High tennis teams beat Albuquerque High

Eagle boys and girls teams each win 5-4

Albuquerque The Belen High School tennis teams escaped Albuquerque with narrow victories Thursday afternoon.

In a dual match against the Albuquerque High Bulldogs, the Eagles managed 5-4 wins in both the boys and girls competitions.

The Belen boys earned all five of their points with straight-set victories. David Grega, Joe Lawson and Daniel Romero picked up singles points, while the doubles teams of Fred Landavazo/Lawson and Fernando Hernandez/Reggie Marshall scored wins.

By topping the Bulldogs, the Eagle boys' record improved to 7-2.

The Lady Eagles' points didn't come as easily in Albuquerque. Although Belen's Loretta Lawson swept her singles opponent, Ariana Salas and Monica Chavez needed three sets to top theirs.

Salas, who played No. 3 singles, took the first set over Hannah Bowman, 6-4, but dropped the second set 6-2. Salas came back to win the third set, 6-1.

Chavez, who was playing No. 5 singles, lost her first set to Audrey Heyman 6-3, but came back to win the next two sets, 6-4 and 6-1.

The Lady Eagles clinched the match by winning two of the three doubles matches.

Belen's No. 1 team of Katrina Sanchez and Lawson beat Albuquerque High's Becca Pava and Leah Barreras, 6-4, 6-2. The Lady Eagles' No. 2 team of Lorina Castillo and Salas defeated Alexia Klages and Bowen, 6-1, 6-4.

Tthe Lady Eagles' victory improved their overall record to 6-3.

The Eagle tennis team will be on the road again Tuesday when Belen visits Valley.
