LLHS softball team falls to La Cueva

Lady Tigers get just three hits in 8-2 loss to 8th-ranked Bears

Los Lunas All was going well for the Los Lunas Lady Tigers in their non-district softball game against La Cueva on Saturday. But things took a turn for the worse in the fifth inning.

"We played good defense the first four innings," LLHS coach Paul Cieremans said. "But before you knew it, it was 3-to-2."

Just one error, by shortstop Danielle Garcia, was recorded in the scorebook during the Bears' three-run fifth. But Cieremans said Los Lunas made its share of mental errors and misjudging of fly balls to the outfield.

After relinquishing its lead, Los Lunas' pitching crumbled. La Cueva (2-1) took advantage with six hits and five runs in the sixth and coasted to an 8-2 win.

Coming off a bout with the flu, Amy Sedillo started her first game in more than a week at pitcher. She didn't allow an earned run until the sixth, when the Bears strung together three straight hits.

Adri Gabaldon came on in relief. After a rough start, she settled down to record the final five outs.

The Tigers took the lead in the third inning. Christina Montoya reached on a bunt single, and Marissa Sanchez took a base after being hit by a pitch. Garcia then advanced the runners on a ground out.

Sedillo scored Montoya on a squeeze bunt. Sanchez came home on a passed ball, and the Tigers were ahead 2-0.

But that's all the Tigers would score against La Cueva pitcher Lauren Goldfarb, who surrendered just three hits.

"You've got to give her credit," Cieremans said of Goildfarb. "She was hitting her spots and threw great ball."

Teresa Lara, Devonne Martinez and Montoya had Los Lunas' hits.

With the loss, Los Lunas dropped to 4-4. The Tigers played Rio Rancho Tuesday after News-Bulletin press time. Next up is their annual game against county rival Belen on Thursday.

Game time is 6p.m. at the Belen High School field.
