Young Guns host prep rodeo this weekend in Hub City

Belen The Valencia County Young Guns Rodeo Club will host a high school rodeo this Saturday and Sunday at the Valencia County Sheriff's Posse Arena in Belen.

Action gets under way at 9 a.m. each day.

Hundreds of prep cowboys and cowgirls from across the state will attend the event, competing for points and prize money.

Several local competitors will be trying to improve their ranking in the season-long points standings.

In the all-around cowboy standings, Seth Hall of Los Lunas is running second. He's the individual leader in calf roping and steer wrestling. He's in ninth place in team roping, along with his partner, Ryan Cook.

Clint King, who is second in steer wrestling, is ninth in the all-around standings.

For the girls, Shiann Irwin is fourth in the all-around cowgirl standings, while Cathy Long is eighth.

Irwin is the points leader in pole bending and is fourth in barrel racing. Long is in third place in barrel racing.
