Daly helps NMSU rodeo team to dominating win at Farmington

Saddle bronc rider takes second

Dean Daly of Belen aided the New Mexico State University rodeo team as it dominated the competition at the second annual New Mexico College — High School Challenge, held Nov. 2-4 in Farmington by the New Mexico Rodeo Council.

Daly placed second in the saddle bronc event.

With the men's team placing second overall and the women's team winning first, NMSU finished first above the other competing universities. This is the second year in a row that the university has won the rodeo, which is held as a contest between college rodeo teams and high schools students.

"The high school kids held their own during the competition. This rodeo is a good chance for college coaches to see the up-and-coming talent," said Jim Dewey Brown, NMSU coach.

NMSU's Wyatt Althoff placed third in steer wrestling.

Header Chad Steele and heeler Tyson Runyan won first in team roping. In the breakaway roping event, Julie Etchegaray placed third.

Bailey Gow and Kelsi Elkins won first and third, respectively, in barrel racing. Brittany Striegel was second. Elkins took third in the goat-tying event.

Gow also won all-around cowgirl for the event, with Elkins finishing second.

Overall, the NMSU team beat the closest finisher, Eastern New Mexico University, by nearly 600 points.
