County rodeo standouts top lists

News-Bulletin reports

When 2008 begins, things will be much the same way they were when 2007 began, at least as far as the New Mexico High School Rodeo Association's points standings are concerned, with cowboys and cowgirls tied to Valencia County at or near the top in many categories.

The last of five fall-season rodeos was held Oct. 19-21 at the Valencia County Sheriff's Posse, with Seth Hall tying for the Boys All-Around award at the event. The season runs throughout the 2007-08 school year, so many rodeos are still ahead.

Hall is in first place in boys all-around competition so far with 160 points. Kaity Ray, this year's student president of the NMHSRA, leads the girls side with 137.

Brock Dearing is 21st on the boys points list 36. On the girls side, Shiann Irwin is eighth with 36 points; Tori Codgill is 28th with 27, and Shauni Gibson is 44th.

In individual events, Hall leads in both calf roping and steer wrestling, and he's seventh in team roping. Brock Dearing is 10th in calf roping.

Ray leads all girls in barrel racing and breakaway roping and is sixth in goat tying. Irwin is sixth in barrel racing, ninth in pole bending and 17th in goat tying.

The spring season is tentatively set to kick off with a rodeo in Farmington on March 15 and 16, 2008. Plans are in place for a rodeo at the Sheriff's Posse on April 4 and 5.

The NMHSRA 2007-08 season will conclude in Carlsbad, as it did last year. The state finals are set for June 4-8.
