It's Hurricanes vs. the parents at the Belen H.S. pool

Duane Barbati News-Bulletin Staff Writer; dbarbati@news-bulletin.com

Belen Parents and their children competed against each other as the Belen Hurricanes swim club held a fun meet Saturday.

The teams of parents and swim club members competed in a medley relay, a running relay, Coke dive and splash contest. The medley had parents and Hurricanes swimming the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle. The running-in-the-water relay event had teams of four members running in the water. Hurricane coach Nick Rodriguez threw cans of soft drinks into the pool for the Coke dive. Hurricane team members dived into the water to retrieve as many cans of soft drinks as they could.

"What better fun than to race against your parents," said Rodriguez. "I like to give the kids one fun day during the season."

The Hurricanes are a youth swim club that competes in the Sundance Aquatic League. The Belen team heads to Socorro for a July 12 meet, then gears up for the District D championships. That meet, used to determine qualifiers for the Sundance league meet, is set for Thursday, July 17, at Del Norte Sports & Wellness.

The season-ending Sundance meet is set for Saturday, July 19, at the West Mesa Aquatic Center.
