Alex Estrada wins twice on links

News-Bulletin reporters

Golfer Alex Estrada of Rio Communities won two tournaments at the end of his summer season, just before heading off to college for the fall.

Estrada won the Ruidoso Cup at the new Rainmakers Golf Club near Ruidoso in mid-August by shooting a 74, and then shot a 75 at Tierra Del Sol Golf Club, his home course, to win the TDS Club Championship a few days later.

"I hadn't won anything in a while," Estrada said regarding the two victories. "So it's nice, especially in the last part of the summer."

Estrada is heading to Hobbs to become a member of the men's golf team at College of the Southwest. The 2007 Hope Christian High School graduate kept an active summer since returning from Wayland Baptist College in Texas, where he completed a redshirt season before transferring to CSW.

At the TDS club championship, Estrada said his score wasn't top notch, but was good enough to win. He was tied with Clinton Tabet and Bobby Hernandez going into the final hole, and while both of those players bogeyed, Estrada made par.

"I didn't find out until later how close we all were," said Estrada.

Hernandez, Tabet and Benny Martin all finished at 75, one shot behind Estrada.
