Two Lady Tigers make All-District 5-5A team

Chavez, Peña picked by coaches

John Gale News-Bulletin Staff Writer; jgale@news-bulletin.com

Los Lunas Two members of the Los Lunas volleyball team were recognized as all-district performers in District 5-5A.

Senior libero Kaitlyn Chavez and junior outside hitter/blocker Korriah Peña made the all-district team, as they helped their team to a 9-13 overall record and an appearance in the semifinals of the district tournament.

Chavez anchored the Lady Tigers' floor defense with her strong digs and passing, as she was consistent without being particularly flashy, though she did have a spectacular dig or two from time to time.

Peña was one of Los Lunas' most consistent hitters and best offensive options throughout the year, along with fellow outside hitter Felicia Wortman.

Peña hit the ball hard and was the Tigers' best blocker on defense, especially after senior middle blocker DeAnza Davis was lost with a knee injury early in the season.

"I had to step up and play in the middle, and I've learned a lot since last season," said Peña. "I learned to go hard after every ball every time."

The junior said teammate Felicia Wortman, who was new to varsity volleyball, improved a lot and will be even tougher in 2009.

"She had a good season, and she's a good hitter and a good blocker," said Peña.

Pena is following in the footsteps of her older sister, Kameo, who was one of three Tigers seniors to make the all-district three straight seasons and is now a redshirt freshman on the University of New Mexico team.

Korriah Peña will be back next season to try to match or improve on her performance. Korriah said working with her sister has helped improve her game tremendously.

Chavez and Korriah Peña joined Whitney Fay, Samantha Grant, Mikaila Lovato and Chelsea Stuckey of Eldorado, as well as Whitney Polosky, Victoria Ramariez, Ashley Clevenger and Brittney Herbert of Manzano.

Rayanna Johnson and Karen Fejeran of Highland rounded out the team.
