Saturday, June 27, 2009 Hall, Daly score points for their schools at nationalsFor two college rodeo athletes who are among those with Valencia County ties, their trips to the College National Finals Rodeo didn't result in placing as high as each would like. But each one earned points that helped out their respective teams. Seth Hall, a native of Los Lunas, competing on behalf of Odessa College in Texas, teamed with Cole Jackson of Animas recently to place 23rd at the 2009 College National Finals Rodeo in team roping. Jackson was representing Eastern New Mexico University at the national finals, which are held in Casper, Wyo. Jackson and Hall, both freshmen, were both making their first appearance at college nationals. Dean Daly, who has ties to Belen, was making his third appearance in saddle bronc riding at nationals. The junior, competing for New Mexico State University, placed 18th in the saddle bronc this year. Hall and Jackson had a no-score effort in the first and third rounds. Their second-round score of 7.5 was impressive, however. Daly, who was fifth in the nation in the saddle bronc in 2007 as a freshman, also had a no-score on his first ride. He bounced back with a 73.5 and then a 76.0, but missed the short go finals. Daly's performance helped make the New Mexico State men's team 13th overall. Eastern was 31st, while Odessa was 53rd. Hall finished the regular 2008-09 season ranked second among Southwest Region headers, while Jackson was the third-ranked heeler. Hall was also ninth in calf roping, but didn't qualify for nationals in that event. Daly was third in saddle bronc riding points in the Grand Canyon Region to advance.
