The Belen and Valencia football teams took their acts on the road Friday, opening the district portion of their schedules with wins and setting the stage for this week's Battle for The Plow rivalry game between the Eagles an Jaguars at Jaguar Stadium in Tomé at 7 p.m. Friday.
Host No. 9 Valencia came into their match against Los Lunas ranked higher in Class 5A, but it was the Tigers who left Valencia High School with sole possession of second place in District 3-5A after a three-set sweep of the Jaguars Tuesday night.
The Belen boys soccer team stunned Valencia by coming back from a 2-0 deficit to force extra time Tuesday. But the Jags shocked the Eagles right back, scoring a stunning golden goal in the 82nd minute â€• just two minutes into overtime â€• to leave Eagle Field with a dramatic 3-2 win Tuesday afternoon and deny Belen their first district win of the season.
