Belen boys singles players lead Eagles to win
The Belen High School boys tennis team swept all three singles matches en route to a 3-2 win over Highland on Tuesday at Belen.
Derek Lynch, Paul Moya and Charles Montoya easily won their matches — Lynch blanking his opponent 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 1 singles match and Moya and Montoya giving up just three and two games respectively in their No. 2 and 3 singles matches.
While both of Belen’s doubles teams lost, the Eagles put up a fight. Ray Feldbush and Nick Rodriguez lost their No. 1 doubles match in three sets. And Newcomers Gary Lawson and Jacob Paul dropped the No. 2 doubles match 7-6 (7-5 in the tie-breaker), 7-5.
Meanwhile, the Lady Eagles lost to the Hornets, 4-1. Belen’s No. 1 doubles team of Kristin Elkins and Clarita Valdez won another nail-biter 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
Belen’s boys and girls teams are now 2-3 in head-to-head matches this year. The Eagles next host Grants at 3 p.m. Tuesday. They’ll finish the week at a two-day tournament at Las Vegas Robertson next Friday and Saturday.
