“As the current Valencia County assessor seeking reelection, my experience includes over 30 years with this office and three years with the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department-Property Tax Bureau, I am state and IAAO certified in appraisal. I believe these factors make me the more qualified candidate for county assessor.”
- What, in your opinion, are the most important duties of the county assessor?

“The assessor’s main duty is to educate and create policies and procedures to ensure the office conducts itself within the requirements set forth by the state of New Mexico.
“The assessor’s obligation is to follow state statutes along with keeping values fair and equitable throughout the county.”
- How does the assessor’s office determine the valuation of a property?
“The assessor’s office begins appraisal by determining the current market value of the specific property type or area by comparing current sales. Values are then established by finding the median or middle sales price, and then applied to the specific area. Examples of property types: agricultural, residential, non-residential, commercial.”

- What in your experience, education, etc., makes you qualified for this position?
“I am a state certified appraiser and worked for several years in the assessor’s office, where I was a mapper, an appraiser and then chief deputy assessor. I also worked at New Mexico Property Tax Division, where we conducted the county assessors annual evaluations and protest hearings.”
- What, in your opinion, are the most important duties of the county assessor?
“Fair and accurate assessment for all the residence of Valencia County, as well as making sure that the residents who qualify for exemptions, such as agricultural or veteran’s exemptions, get those exemptions. Also making sure that personal property such as business personal property and livestock are accurately reported.”
- How does the assessor’s office determine the valuation of a property?
“Valuations of properties is determined by the market. As houses sell, a market is established. Valencia County has many different areas, creating many different markets. It is the duty of the assessor to know those markets and value properties accordingly.”

Absentee ballots
Absentee ballots will begin going out on Tuesday, Oct. 11. The last day to request an absentee ballot from the Valencia County clerk’s office is Thursday, Nov. 3. Absentee ballots must be returned to the clerk’s office by 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 8.
