UNM-Valencia Campus to host no-cost school safety and security training

On Wednesday, May 6, the University of New Mexico-Valencia Campus will host AWR-148: Crisis Management for School-Based Incidents at the Student Community Center in Tomé.

This FEMA-certified course, offered at no cost, is designed to provide rural emergency responders and school staff with the essential skills that would allow for an effective response to school-based emergencies.

The eight-hour training is specifically designed to help rural communities become better prepared to plan, prepare, respond and recover from a school-based incident.

All local school administrators and personnel; school resource officers; security personnel; rural emergency responders — specifically law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services and emergency management agencies, community mental health personnel and local emergency planners — are encouraged to attend.

Topics covered include emergency operations plans, school-based functional responsibilities, vulnerability assessments, targeted violence/targeted violence prevention, threat assessment management, securing campus protocols, reunification and recovery efforts.
