VHS Student Council receives 2025 Student Council of the Year Platinum Award
Valencia High School’s student council is thrilled to have received the 2025 Student Council of the Year Platinum Award.
“This is the culmination of three years of work built upon a foundation that goes even further than that,” said VHS student council teacher Ryan Navarro.
For the past three years, the VHS Student Council has submitted a robust report reflecting on their goals and struggles.
The student councils are graded on a rubric based on their involvement in the community, the projects they complete, the manner in which they run their council and their involvement in the NM Association of Student Councils.
If they score well enough, councils can earn either a bronze, silver or gold award. In 2023 and 2024, the VHS student council took home the gold. The students were under the impression that you needed to earn three consecutive years of gold to be eligible for platinum. However, they were pleasantly surprised to take home the top prize of platinum this year.
“This would have been year three, so they thought they needed one more year, but in fact they brought home the platinum award with a perfect score on their report,” said Navarro.
The big win was made all the better knowing they also won second place in both the Judges’ Choice and Delegates’ Choice for their environmental awareness project and first place in the Judges’ Choice for their staff relations project.
