What do our elected officials take home?
Next week voting in the 2025 Local Regular Election will wrap up on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
Candidates for mayoral races, city council seats, boards of education and special districts will either step into new roles or continue in old ones, but regardless of who wins some folks will receive compensation.
The News-Bulletin reached out to all the local governing agencies and asked what the annual compensation is for their elected officials. Some of the amounts may surprise you.
City of Belen
Mayor: $18,012
Councilors: $12,000 each
Municipal judge: $44,990
Village of Bosque Farms
Mayor: $5,000
Councilors: $1,200
Municipal judge: $4,500
Bosque Farms Village Treasurer Yvonne Maes reported former mayor Russ Walkup and current Mayor Chris Gillespie declined their salaries.
Village of Los Lunas
Mayor: $12,500
Councilors: $12,000
Municipal judge: $65,000
Town of Peralta
Mayor: $7,200
Councilors: $2,400
Municipal judge: $6,000
City of Rio Communities
Mayor: $0
Councilors: $0
Municipal judge: $3,600
Belen Board of Education
Belen BOE members receive a stipend of $45 per board/committee meeting. If that meeting is longer than four hours, the stipend is $95.
Los Lunas Board of Education
Los Lunas BOE members receive a stipend of $95 per day to attend official meetings, regardless of the number of meetings in a day.
Per board resolution, $50 of each check, after taxes, is donated to the School Board’s Scholarship.
University of New Mexico-Valencia Advisory Board
UNM-Valencia Advisory Board members are not compensated.
Valencia Soil & Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors
Members of the VSWCD board of supervisors receives $45 for meetings less than four hours and $90 for participation in meetings longer than four hours.
Valencia County Arroyo Flood Control District
The board members are uncompensated but mileage reimbursements are allowed. However, at this time, the VCAFCD has no revenue streams for expenses.
Most agencies will cover travel expenses for elected officials to attend events, trainings and conferences pertaining to their official duties, including registration costs, travel expenses, lodging and food.
