Q: If you became invisible for the day, what would you do?
A: “I think I would spend the entire time simply people-watching without any pressure, expectations or anyone needing anything from me. It would be so peaceful to just observe the world quietly, seeing how people interact, noticing the small moments we often overlook and enjoying the freedom of blending completely into the background.
“It would feel like a much-needed break from constant responsibilities and a chance to recharge while taking in life from a totally different perspective. It would also give me the opportunity to see the world through my kids and student’s eyes. I know their world is much different than it was for me when I was their age.”
Q: What’s the weirdest thing you believed as a kid?
A: “When I was in elementary school at Rio Grande Elementary, I remember on St. Patrick’s Day when we came back to class from recess, our classroom was all a mess from the leprechaun. I was so confused as to why none of the teachers were concerned there was a leprechaun running around the school, destroying the classrooms.
“I remember thinking, ‘We are just going to go on about our day and not worry about this!?’ Rio Grande Elementary was always a special place for me growing up, and the staff always helped make memories for all the students! “
Q: What does your ideal weekend look like?
A: “I am a homebody so anytime I can be at home, relaxing and enjoying my family, I really try to do that. When I am at home, I enjoy baking, practicing volleyball with my daughter, practicing music, watching mindless TV and taking a good afternoon nap.
“I also love to take drives (as long as my husband does the driving) to see different neighborhoods and places, especially now during Christmas time. I like to live slow-paced, so anytime that I get to spend with my family, quietly, is an ideal weekend to me!”
Q: If you could only have three things on your bucket list, what would they be?
Q:“One of the biggest goals on my bucket list is to visit all 50 states so I can experience the unique culture, history and adventure each one has to offer.
“I’d also love to drive a real race car. I couldn’t even imagine how fun that would be, even though in real life I am terrified to drive.
“And, for a little luxury, I would absolutely enjoy having a personal chef grocery shop and cook all my meals for an entire year. That alone would be life changing!”
Q: Do you have a secret talent? What is it?
A: “It’s not exactly a secret talent, but people often seem surprised when I tell them that I sing in my church choir and that I’ve previously played the piano, clarinet and guitar.
“Guitar was definitely an epic failure back in high school. I couldn’t quite get the hang of it, but I loved the challenge and the opportunity of trying something new. I continue to practice piano when I have a chance; it is so calming, even though it is challenging. I also love being able to read music, which has made learning instruments and performing even more rewarding and enjoyable.”
Q: Have you ever seen a ghost? Where?
A: “I’ve never actually seen a ghost, but if I ever do, I really hope it’s the helpful kind; preferably one that folds laundry, unloads the dishwasher and picks up toys without having to be asked over and over again.
“Honestly, with how chaotic things can get with kids and life, a ghost could probably blend right in, and I could just welcome them to the family. If a ghost wants to haunt my house by helping with homework, making dinner, or reminding the kids to pick up all their things, I’d welcome them with open arms, and it could be my full-time, invisible household assistant!”
Q: If your dog, cat or other pet could talk, what’s the first thing it would say?
A: “The first thing she would probably say is, ‘Gluten-free treats again?’ I can almost hear the mix of disappointment and sarcasm in her voice, with the head side tilt expression.
“She would definitely let me know how she really feels about healthy snacks while secretly plotting with my husband and kids to steal the tastier ones. I also think she would have a lot to say about our organized family chaos and start to laugh along with us.”
Q: If you could have a lifetime supply of anything (except money), what would it be and why?
A: “Diet Coke! I truly love a crisp, cold Diet Coke. There’s just something about that first sip that is instantly refreshing and delicious. At this point, I probably should own stock in Coca-Cola because it is my guilty pleasure.
“My husband knows, if he goes to the gas station, he shouldn’t come home empty handed. Some people have their coffee or tea rituals, but for me, nothing compares to a perfectly chilled Diet Coke, fountain preferable, of course!”
Q: You’re granted three wishes. What are they? (And you can’t ask for more wishes.)
A: “My first wish would be to have heartache vanish as we know it. This includes suffering from losing family, chronic health issues and emotional and physical pain, and anything else that people suffer from.
“My second wish would be for a self-cleaning house. I just imagine what it would be like to never have to vacuum or pick up after anyone again! That would be amazing.
“And my third wish would be to own a private island, a peaceful escape I could visit anytime I wanted, filled with sunshine, relaxation and all the fun things my family enjoys.”
Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A: “Professionally, I see myself in an administrative position where I can lead a team with purpose and vision while continuing to support and inspire young minds. I absolutely love working with students every day, and in my current position, I am fortunate to have the capacity to build connections with them and be their advocate. I want to create an environment where both staff and students feel motivated, valued and empowered to reach their full potential.
“Of course, I would also plan to share my baked goods and secret to survive endless meetings, because a little humor and fresh cookies go a long way in education!”
Q: If money didn’t matter, what job would you have?
A: “I would have two because I couldn’t choose just one. I would love to work at a bakery/candy shop. I love sweets and I have watched so many ‘how-to’ videos on how they make candy and I think it is really a calm, fun kind of job. I enjoy baking and making desserts every now and then for my family and staff.
“The other would be in home décor. I absolutely love to decorate my home and my office. I think it gives such personality to a space. I don’t like vibrant colors or have an extravagant style, but you can make something yours by adding simple touches.”
Q: Is there anything about you that people are surprised to learn?
A: “I am a fifth generation educator. My great-great-grandfather was Henry T. Jaramillo. The former HT Jaramillo Elementary school was named after him.
“My great-grandfather was John S. Aragon, who was a former teacher, principal, and superintendent for Belen Consolidated Schools.
“My grandma, Rosalyn Chavez, is a former elementary teacher, my great-aunt Annette Benavidez, is a former high school math teacher, and my great-aunt Karen Aragon is also a former teacher.
My mom, Cheryl Martinez, is a former third and fourth grade teacher, and is currently teaching math at Infinity High School. We get to work together which is a blessing! I have worked at Infinity High School for 12 years, and even my husband is a teacher now, too.”
Q: If you could pick a day to relive again and again, which one would it be?
A: “I would easily say my 10-year wedding anniversary. We celebrated the milestone by renewing our vows at our church, surrounded by our family and friends, and it was one of the most meaningful moments of my life. Standing there, recommitting to each other after a decade of love, growth and challenges felt incredibly special.
“It was a beautiful reminder of how far we’ve come and how grateful I am for the life we’ve built together with our kids there to witness it. We also got to eat lunch with all our family and take pictures to remember this special time.”
Q: Would you rather spend a day without your phone or without speaking? Why?
A: “I could easily go without my phone but going without speaking would be much harder for me because I genuinely love to talk. I often joke that I can turn a short story into a long one, and honestly, it’s true.
“At the same time, we live in a world where everything is right at our fingertips, making it incredibly easy to get caught up in our screens. When that happens, we can unintentionally miss the real moments, connections and experiences happening around us and at this point in my life, I really do not want to miss anything because time is a thief.”
Q: What is your biggest pet peeve? Why?
A: “My biggest pet peeve is clutter! I try to keep as few unnecessary ‘things’ in my home as possible, and I make a real effort to ensure we go to bed with the house tidy.
“My poor kids are constantly hearing me remind them to pick up their trash or put their toys away. Physical clutter adds to my mental clutter, and I start to feel overwhelmed and irritated when my surroundings feel chaotic.
“Because of that, I make a conscious effort to maintain a clean, organized space so our home feels calm, welcoming and peaceful for everyone.”
Q: What is that moment in your life you will always remember?
A: “I have been fortunate to experience many memorable moments and meet some truly amazing people. Infinity High School has a small staff, which allows us to get to know each other very well.
Almost two years ago, we lost one of our beloved teachers, and though it was one of the hardest days, we continue to honor his memory through laughter. He always said and did the funniest things and, even now, we find ourselves laughing about something he said or did. Remembering those joyful moments reminds me that even in difficult times, the memories we share can bring comfort, a smile and a good belly laugh.”
Q: If you woke up as your 16-year-old self tomorrow, what would you do?
A: “I would instantly jump back into playing sports! I especially miss playing volleyball with the anticipation of games, friendships and working together with a team is something I miss.
“I would also take the opportunity to savor my high school experiences more fully, cherish friendships and maybe even try new activities I didn’t have the courage to explore the first time around. I would also remind myself to not take everything so seriously, to have fun and that it is okay to fail all while taking the opportunity to learn.”
Q: What’s the strangest purchase you’ve made (or almost made)?
A: “My husband and I love to go thrift store shopping, so you never know what you will find there. We have refurbished some items and made them our own which is super fun to do.
“One time though, he snuck a Shake Weight into our basket. If you might remember, the Shake Weight was the newest, hottest fitness device of the 2010s. In college, I even did a presentation on determining if the Shake Weight actually helped muscle growth. Surprise, it didn’t, but we had a good laugh when he bought it and ours kids think it is hilarious to use, even our 2 year old.”
Q: Where was your most unforgettable vacation?
A: “After I graduated from high school, my grandma and I went on an unforgettable vacation to Lourdes, Fatima and Madrid. Visiting these sacred sites was truly inspiring and seeing Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of Fatima in person was absolutely breathtaking.
“The experience was not only visually stunning but also deeply meaningful, giving me a sense of peace but also gave me a greater sense of understanding of our beautiful faith. Traveling with my grandma made it even more special because she is the one who taught me to pray, creating memories I will cherish forever.”
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?
A: “I would travel to the Galilee region, where Jesus lived, taught and performed many of His miracles. There is something very meaningful about being able to walk the same paths, see the same landscapes and experience the places that hold such deep spiritual and historical significance.
“Visiting Galilee would feel like stepping directly into the stories I’ve read and heard my whole life, and recently been re-learning through my personal faith journey. I imagine it would be both peaceful and breathtaking and offer me a chance for reflection, and a renewed sense of faith-filled understanding of the love and sacrifice Jesus gave us.”
