“We are honored that the community of Valencia County has chosen Southwest Grill for the Best Breakfast Burrito 2025,” exclaimed the co-owner, Caroline Lovato. “Looking back, it’s amazing to see how far we have come from when we first opened our business in 1997.”

The restaurant started as Southwest Foods, selling only beef jerky. Bob and Caroline Lovato then added a small pot of beans, chile and chicharrónes and began serving chicharróne burritos. With the addition of more menu items and a new name — Southwest Grill — they now have a full New Mexico-style menu with many flavors of burritos, enchiladas, tacos, stuffed sopapillas and much more.

8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday

One Bosque Farms restaurant took top honors in three categories this year. Benny’s has the Best Green Chile, Best Green Chile Cheeseburger and Best Tacos.

Daniel Zamora, son of the restaurant’s founder, the eponymous Benny, said when he heard they had won, at first he couldn’t believe it.

“I wasn’t sure it was real,” Zamora said. “It’s really nice. We’re amazed and excited. I want to thank our crew and the community for all their support.”

The eatery gets its green chile straight from the fields in Hatch with the help of a southern local.

“She grew up in Hatch and gets us the best crop. She knows what we like here — we like it a bit hotter than most,” he said.

Benny’s sticks to Matador chile or the G 76, Zamora said, which is used on their famous green chile cheeseburgers — the Benny Burgers. The Burgers are made from fresh ground beef, provided by Albuquerque butcher shop Nelson’s Meats, the restaurant’s source since it opened in July 1972.

“They give us the best; they don’t mess around,” he said.

That same ground beef is used to make their tacos, simply seasoned and traditional. The shells that carry the beef, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes are made in-house, Zamora said, never store bought.

“Every, single one,” he said. “We keep it simple and that helps us keep our prices down.”

We get to see their family, friends and community members.”

According to Crawley, pizza making is difficult, so chefs take a lot of time learning the craft. “It’s all handmade,” at the location Crawley says, with “freshly made dough at the store every morning. We shred our own cheese. We make our own sauce in store. It all starts with really good, fresh ingredients.”

An artist and an advocate for art as a whole, this year’s Best Artist is Monica Kemsley, a 2-D artist who enjoys working in mixed media, watercolor and acrylic and more.

“Thank you Valencia County for honoring me with your votes for Best Artist,” Kemsley said. “I hear often people feel like they can’t do art, that they aren’t skilled enough. No one is a ‘good artist’ when they first start creating. They just keep at it until they improve.”

Kemsley has been a member of the Belen Art League for three years, and a board member for the past year. She also hosts quarterly paint parties at the Los Lunas Museum of Heritage and Arts. She encourages everyone to get involved making, experiencing and enjoying art.

“If you have the desire to be creative, pursue that. Sign up for the beginner art classes through local art organizations, watch intro tutorials online or follow creatives on social media,” Kemsley said. “You don’t have to be an artist to participate in the art scene. There are so many local art shops, museums, exhibits and events. Take some time to experience art. It’ll add color to your life.

Best Principal

Rhett Burt

Belen High School

Being voted Best Principal is a bit strange for Rhett Burt.

“It’s not my thing. I try to keep a low profile,” said Burt, the Belen High School principal for two years. “It’s cool, but pretty strange.”

Burt’s career in education actually started with Los Lunas Schools, as a fifth-grade teacher at the then Raymond Gabaldon Intermediate School. He eventually moved to Belen Middle School and taught there for four years. Burt then moved to BHS, where he was a physical science teacher for six years, winning the New Mexico governor’s first ever STEM challenge.

He left the classroom and served as an assistant principal at the high school for three years before being named principal.

While both his parents were teachers, growing up in Texas, Burt didn’t always love school.

“It wasn’t difficult but it wasn’t something I always enjoyed doing,” he said. “I loved college though. I took a bunch of classes and have a minor in a lot of things.”

With his love of learning evident, his parents suggested education might be the field for him. As an elementary school student, Burt remembered going to the science lab during class, so becoming an elementary science teacher seemed to line up well.

After he and his wife graduated from college and applied for teaching positions, two districts offered them both positions — Lake Tahoe and Los Lunas Schools.

“I wanted Lake Tahoe and she wanted Los Lunas, so we compromised and went with what she wanted,” Burt said with a chuckle. “I haven’t regretted it for a minute. This is my vice — Belen Schools. This place is a good fit.”

Burt said in a way, being an educator is like being immortal.

“I was thinking about it. You know how you can be immortal? Your mind can become immortal, right? Your thoughts,” he said. “You’re sharing of your knowledge. That’s my immortality. If someone shares it with somebody else and they share it with somebody else, well, that’s immortality.”
