Four Belen police officers recognized for good work
BELEN — It was a night of honor and camaraderie at the second annual Belen Police Department’s Policeman’s Ball.
The officers and civilian staff dressed their best, ate a good meal, danced the night away at Fat Sat’s Bar and Grill in Belen while they celebrated with one another and their spouses.
Interim Police Chief Adam Keck said he was proud of the department and the officers for their dedication and passion for helping the community every single day.
Officer Manuel Monte was given the first award for Outstanding Community Commitment.
“We have a lot going on in Valencia County, like Special Olympics, the DWI Council and when there’s an event happening, last minute, Monte will stand up and volunteer to do it,” said Deputy Chief Mario Vallejos. “To be honest with you, that’s what we need — team work.”
Officer Dominic Duran was given the Most Improved Officer Award. Vallejos said Duran has shown the most self improvement, work ethic and dedication throughout the past year.
“He has had his difficulties ... but his self-dedication and work ethic that has got him to where he is today,” Vallejos said. “It doesn’t matter how many times I have him in my office, telling him this and that ... he accepts all the responsibility, and we can all learn from him.”
Keck announced Detective Kyana Garcia received the honor of Officer of the Year.
“Detective Garcia has helped many officers, including one who wanted to give her a commendation,” Keck said. “I don’t think he voted, but she has done great in detectives. She’s stepped up with violent crimes, and anytime you guys holler, she is right there to help.”
Sgt. Jason Skopek was awarded the Leadership Award, with Keck saying he was a “good leader.”
“A good leader is someone who has a vision and imparts that vision to where it helps the department and gets people to process that plan,” Keck said.
Vallejos reminded the staff and officers that while there needs to be a clear separation between work and home, he wanted to remind them that they are a “really good team” and he hopes they all realize they are a “work family” who is always there for one another.
